It depends on the countries of origin and destination, and the carrier's home country if it's not one of those two.

All flights to/from the US are nonsmoking by law. However, I think some countries let the airlines make their own decisions.

As far as smoking in a seat goes, I can remember flying even when I was young and I honestly don't have any memories of people smoking on board. How bad was it? If you were sitting in non smoking could you still smell smoke?

i am pretty sure, it's older than 5 years. i would say AF has banned smoking since 2001/2002 at least, probably before 2000.

Could be. I have flown so much in the last 7-8 years that its all a blur. But when they did allow this how long "sessions" did they allow during say a 8hr flight?
