World Cigarette Prices

I wanted to start a thread as a smoker who constantly has to decide if it would be cheaper to pre-purchase my trips worth of smokes, or buy them on site. It would be nice to have somewhere to go (by searching for the title) and being able to get an idea of that smokes costs in each state.

Please only post prices or deals or places to go, this isn't about whether or not to smoke, or the other common topics discussed when someone brings up smoking. Prices and deal talk only!

United States -

CA - Carton High $30's to Mid $40's (Fire Safe)
CT - Carton $60's
FL - Carton Low $30's
IL - Carton Mid $30's
MI - Carton Mid to high $40's
MO - Carton High $20's
NC - Carton Low $30's
NJ - Carton $60's
OH - Carton Mid $40's

Chicago - Expensive
NY, NY - Arm & Leg ($8 pack) (Fire Safe)

North America & Europe Duty Free - $35 USD
South America & Asia - under $20 USD

Taxes affect prices... http://www.taxadmin.org/FTA/rate/cigarett.html

Introducing International Prices -

Argentina - Carton $13
England - Pack £5.80+ (20)
Germany - Pack €3.90 (17) fixed price
Philippines - Carton $8
Spain - Pack €2.65 (fixed)

Hopefully you will find a state with the cheapest taxes, and can toke up! Research shows that smokers are actually a lesser burden on the healthcare system, since y'all die before you can get too expensive to care for.

:p

I usually end up buying a carton of Marlboro Lights for my dad wherever I travel.

NYC, Boston, Las Vegas and Los Angeles prices tend to be higher than those in Miami, Houston, or Chicago. I'm sure it has a lot to do with taxes.

My dad usually drives to Pennsylvania once in a while to stock up on cigs because they're siginificantly cheaper, even after wasting a bunch of gas.

Connecticut is about $60.00USD. I travel alot so all my ciggarettes are bought in duty free shops at the airport. NA and Europe duty free are about $35.00USD S. America and Asia are under $20.00USD.

If I did not travel international monthly for business I think I would buy a fully refundable international ticket every few months and still stock up in duty free.
:)

skylady Sep 9, 2008 2:37 am

CA is about $45 for a carton.

gdeluca Sep 9, 2008 5:20 am

I live in Illinois across the river from St. Louis. Illinois runs $35+ tax per carton, Missouri around $26+ tax. Quik Trip always has good prices. Cheapest country I've found is Mexico ;)

slawecki Sep 9, 2008 6:06 am

the I95 cottage industry is running cigaretts up from NC,SC, and VA to NY,NJ. the industry flourishes from the differential in state taxes.

Cheapest I can get them for in NYC is $8/pack, and that's a small convenience store in the middle of Queens. If you come here, bring your own stash. It's possible to get black market smokes for around $5/pack, but I'm not personally connected.

brendog Sep 9, 2008 7:27 am

If I were smart, I'd buy my squares online, but that would require forethought and such. Pretty much the entire NE US is pricey, although NH isn't too bad, nor is PA, as previously mentioned. I generally pay $7 just outside of NYC, and $9-$10 in the city.

The SE is always cheaper, ranging from $3-$6 a pack, in my experience.

It really doesn't matter, though, as if I need a pack, I'm prepared to pay whatever to satisfy my craving, and to avoid killing anyone...:D

Depending on how you work the players club in a LAS casino you can get them comped, but looking at these prices reminds me that I’m glad I quit 3 years ago.

When I was commuting back and forth from Charlotte to Ohio a couple years ago, my routine was to hit the gas station on the way to the airport for cartons of Marlboro Lights, Winston Lights, and Newports....all were in the $26-$29 range whereas here in Ohio they were about $35. Now Ohio has jumped up to $42-ish ($48 for the Newports) so it would be an even better deal. Alas, no longer doing that run.

But in Virginia last month for vacation, I saw that as we entered the northern part of the state, all three brands were in the $27-$30 range. Outside of major cities prices were similar, but once we got into Norfolk and Virginia Beach, we were back in "captive audience" territory and prices were in the $45/carton or $5/pack range.

sonofzeus Sep 9, 2008 8:49 am

STT/PallMall 100's/9USD per carton/Thurs. special.

I had no idea how expensive cigarettes had gotten in the US, last time I can remember buying a pack it was $4 something in NJ, now apparently they are $6 something (south Jersey) I got a couple of cartons for my friend in VA and they were $3.69 and similar price in DE,. In the UK they must be more than $13 by now but I dont buy cigarettes as I smoke rolling tobacco and go everywhere with my own stash

Lufthomie Sep 9, 2008 9:53 am

Living on the border, I buy my smokes for $21.00 a carton at the UETA.
Some of my fellow smokers buy online a brand called sandia for $16.00 a carton.

Mary2e Sep 9, 2008 10:47 am

NJ - carton about $60.

Fl and NC - carton about $32.

I have some friends who buy them for me in NC.

I've purchased them from this outfit in the past with good results

They take the "cost" right out of your comps. Bally's takes $8 of comps for a pack - they aren't free.

@ Venetian/Palazzo, as long as you are Grazie Gold (which, isn't too difficult to do) you can get a pack every few hours (as a discretionary comp). So, I stock up on Dunhill Reds, because I can. ;);)

pragakhan Sep 9, 2008 8:44 pm

Ok, first update to the OP... As long as people keep posting I will keep updating.. Thank's everyone!

ps - I won't announce updates going forward.

Or maybe he (she) did but chose to do the right thing - encourage you to quit smoking!

Mods, please delete this thread as it promotes a clearly harmful (and possibly illegal, if the reader is under age) activity that we should not promote in any way. FT is about air travel, more generally about sharing travel experiences and opinions or even "OMNI topics", but not about advertising cigarette prices.

pragakhan Sep 9, 2008 9:35 pm

Actually please don't, 25% of the US population are smokers, like it or not this IS related to travel as it centers around the purchase a product while traveling.

Your post and now mine, are off topic.

raph Sep 10, 2008 8:21 am

Why not put international prices up too? :)

E.g. Luckies (my brand)
Germany: €3.90 / Pack of 17 / fixed price
England: £5.80+ (20) depending on store.
Spain: €2.65 (fixed)

Well than apparently it's cheaper to buy duty free cigarettes on a BA flight (£19.50 / carton) than after arrival in CA, right?

raph Sep 10, 2008 8:27 am

That actually reminds of my plan on doing a 'cigarette run' instead of a mileage run... :-)

15 Cartons is pretty much the explainable legal limit within the EU (own consumption / not smuggling). Those (calculating 200/carton) would cost €397.50 in spain or €688.20 in Germany... so taking a €40 Ryanair flight could turn out saving me quite a bit of money... :D

I have been getting my cigarettes whenever I travel to Argentina. I thought the locally produced Marlboro Light was a bargain at around $13 a carton. Until last week when I went to the Philippines, theirs came out to about $8 a carton. They have imported Marlboro too (from Switzerland I think), but they cost a lot more. I couldn't tell the difference between the local ones and the ones I got here in the states.

Some would say that about mileage runs and how they hurt the environment..

back to topic, I used to buy smokes down in NC and SC for friends when I drove truck. A carton was about 1/3 of the price in MN. Its been about 5 years, so I don't know if its still the same :)

pragakhan Sep 10, 2008 4:05 pm

Ok I'll bite, I was going to stick to the US but it only makes sense to include International.. ;)

JBLUA320 Sep 11, 2008 7:52 am

Russia has very cheap cigarettes (but personally I can't stand the taste of the tobacco here, and buy them duty free when I'm in Europe and bring em here) It's $1-1.50 a pack for Marlboros, or about $12 a carton.

Around 15 years ago someone gave me a pack of Aeroflot branded cigarettes with a TU-134 on it.

Nasty! I should’ve left the pack unopened.

Isn't the transportation of more than a certain amount of cigarettes across state lines considered a federal crime? And state-level crimes? (I'm not a lawyer, but a quick Googling revealed a great many references to the illegality of transporting large amounts of cigarettes across state lines.)

I agree with the poster who said that FT should not be involved with advertising cigarette prices, especially given that we have underage members here.

jpatokal Sep 11, 2008 10:59 am

Singapore has you all beat. A single pack costs S$12 (US$8.30) upwards, and while SIN duty-free has some of the cheapest tobacco around, the kicker is that the duty-free allowance into Singapore is zero -- no more than one opened pack (not carton, pack) allowed. And no more sneaking in smokes once this goes through next year:

that's why I'd grab a carton or 2 at most. Most of the cig stores even had big signs in them talking about the limits you could bring across, as so many people used to do it.

What about the children???

I guess we should stop discussing alcohol, too, as the kids might get the wrong idea and start drinking underage. Even worse, the poor young'uns might stumble upon the WN forum and start flying with the antichrist of the skies...

The point of the thread is not to advocate smoking, we already know it's deleterious to our health, but to ascertain the prices of squares around the world.

...and the disclaimer: "Smoking bad. Drinking Bad. FT bad. Don't start or you'll wind up like me...".

N965VJ Sep 11, 2008 1:46 pm

What we should really do is post the addresses of all the Tobacco For Minors® store locations around the country.

They’re usually co-located with Alcohol For Minors® stores (part of the retail distribution unit of Recreational Pharmaceuticals Corporation).

Cheap Cigarettes

A carton of Winston 100's on Florida West coast runs around $25 with tax at certain gas stations.

I was going to buy European cigarettes online but they asked for a checking account number which I was reluctant to give out. Has anyone used such a website that asks for checking account information and what were the results?

I don't believe FT is advertizing the price of cigs. Its the posters of the threads that are relaying cigs prices.

I guess certain members should have included a disclaimer
"opinions of this post do not reflect the position of FT itself" :p

JBLUA320 Oct 20, 2008 6:31 pm

Couldn't said underage members walk into any gas station and see the cigarette prices? It's not like they're hidden..

I remember Marlboros are $55 a carton in Vermont ;)

Billman27 Oct 24, 2008 1:22 am

Dubai Duty free & Beirut Duty Free ~ 10-12 dollars a carton.

stupidhead Oct 24, 2008 3:22 am

Good. They frankly need to be higher since nobody seems to notice that they're paying their arms, legs, and first born for cigarettes, at least in NYC. Say around the range of, $20 a pack? As much as I'm against social engineering, I'm sick and tired of not being able to breathe whenever I walk outside.

And given how incapable smokers are of quitting cigarettes, this could probably pay off the entire national debt plus fund national healthcare.

As far as underage kids goes, they see more vodka commercials per hour on TV than they do here.
