GAS prices to KILL the MR?

If only we could be so lucky. I for one hope that gas prices stay very high. My demand (and the demand of MANY business/leisure travelers) is inelastic.

No matter what the price of oil, and thus plane tickets, I will pay. I gots to travel.

Traveling will be so much nicer when the down class leisure traveller and MR'er can't afford to travel so much. Think of the good 'ole days when the plebians couldn't afford to travel.

I think all of you people who do MR's for entertainment, etc. should maybe try going to a movie.

Unfortunately that's not the way it's going to work - UA can't afford not to have full planes. They will just raise the price 3x. Run 1 plane a day on a route and you will be paying 3x for less convenience and just as jammed a plane.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply they would fly near empty planes.

I just mean that travel will be for those people who ACTUALLY have to travel.

The ridiculously low fares which are required to fill planes at 7x daily frequency but are a losing proposition for the airline are what is killing service (and, coincidently are the MR'ers bread n' butter)

Hopefully airline travel returns to a smaller industry geared towards transporting the well-healed leisure and business traveller in a bit more class/style/comfort.

And I think all of you people who travel for work should maybe try finding a local job that you can drive to. That way there will be more room on the planes for leisure travelers.

Oh, and have fun driving to that wedding.

Maybe we should just all ride our bikes. Shoot, we could make it trans-con in what - 2, 3 weeks?

actually... i'll be flying to that wedding in DL Business class... since fortunately my demand is inelastic and not influenced by price (except when PAID C/F fares are cheaper than Y fares on United - and that has nothing to do with my $$$, but my butt's comfort :))

Dream on. Those were the days when fares were set to guarantee a reasonable profit for the airlines, and everything from seat pitch down to the size of the inflight sandwich conformed to a rigid standard.

Not just UA-related....

An interesting discussion -- but not specific to United. Please follow it over to TravelBuzz. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator, United and TravelBuzz.

Sounds like a person who looks over the reams of his bisected glasses to say "You don't need to do the things I do!" then goes back to reading his newspaper in ignorance. In other words, a snotty post indeed.

Travelling is SO much convinent those days thanks to the jet engine and I will NOT let one person like you spoil those people's ambitions for MR's for status!

One last thing in closing, do you really want everybody to swim in the ocean to their events? ;) Think about that one when you fly at 30,000 feet to your next destination in your big seat. :D

Sanosuke!
