Smoking -- allowed by any airlines?

Are there any commercial carriers that still allow passengers to smoke?

Domestic, No. I seem to recall a vacation trip to Mexico though that did allow smoking on the return trip (Mexico origin), but that was a long time ago.

Welcome to FT!

I'm not sure about all international airlines but none I have been on internationally have allowed smoking. FRA has smoking "stations" in the airport but Lufthansa doesn't allow smoking in flight.

I believe that as of a few years ago, it's illegal for any flight originating or terminating in the US to permit smoking. There almost certainly are some airlines somewhere else in the world that still permit it.

It has been at least 4 years but I flew Air Europa (LGW-MAD) and they allowed smoking at that time. I don't know if they still permit it.

I recall reading a few years back that JAL pilots still ahd a clause in their contracts permitting smoking on the flight-deck.

Welcome to FT! And a very good question indeed, I'm curious myself.

Mandala Air in Indonesia finally banned smoking last year I think. I flew SUB-BTH shortly after the ban took effect and many of the passengers were smoking in and around the rear lav. FA's told them not to but were ignored and after a while it appeared that the FA's had pretty much written it off as useless and unwinnable battle to try to get everyone to quit smoking. I am quite certain the smoke detector in the lav was either non functional or silent and ignored. I 'think' all the Indonesian Airlines have now officially banned smoking but some only very recently.

I recall this news for an all-smoking airline in 1006:

But never heard from it afterwards...

Sure hope not.

Joke site?

http://smintair.com/

SMINTAIR reinstates the liberty of smoking in all seats. Non-smokers will find the cabin air more refreshing than on any other flight with any other airline, as SMINTAIR adds fresh outside air to the conditioning system! This is more expensive, as it burns more fuel, but it is seen as an additional service to our guests.

As the World's first airline re-allowing their guests to smoke, SMINTAIR is entering many uncovered niches in aviation, designed to give the traveller maximum pleasure out of their flight experience

If it's fake, USA Today sure bought it:

So do most airline planes today. The mix is around 50/50 on many planes (recycled air : outside air).

How can one light up when lighters/matches are prohibited?

Interestingly, newer aircraft still seem to have ashtrays in the lav doors.
