Interestingly, newer aircraft still seem to have ashtrays in the lav doors.

Matches that weren't strike anywhere were never banned AFAIK. Lighters are allowed as of last year.

When were lighters allowed again. Granted it's been a month since I flew but at the time it was matches yes, lighters no.

Friendly Reminder From A Moderator

Folks. The question is whether smoking is allowed by any airline?
This is not the thread to discuss your personal feels about smoking.
Thanks for your cooperation.

They're no longer prohibited. I believe the change took effect late last year. I know I flew with 1 or 2 in my carryon last November.

In any event, it was easy enough to get a BIC thru security by putting it in my pocket. And yes, a TSA guy told me about that little trick :)

I left mine in my pocket last week and no problems, less metal than my belt. I guess people could put 6oz of liquid in their pockets too lol

Actually, they're now allowed, so no need for the pocket trick any longer. I made alot of friends at the ashtrays in airports giving them that tip.

FWIW - my dad managed to get thru security with an 8oz bottle of balsamic vinegar without any challenge or comment at all. Had I known he had it, *I* would have taken it away from him :)

I was going to bring that up too. Every time I wander into the lav on a new plane, I wonder why they have the ashtray installed in the wall, complete with part number.

We can tell you rbrenton88. It's in case someone is smoking against regulations, it's considered the safe place for them to stub it out. It's to prevent them putting it in the bin, where it could catch fire.

We are asked this all the time, and to be honest we feel it's a temptation too far. We say they must not smoke then we give them an ashtray, like going to an AA meeting and being presented with a corkscrew. Some passengers take advantage of every facility, they feel it's rude not to!

So that's why, but it still seems wrong even to us who security check it every flight and occasionally find it's got a butt end in it, and once, get this,
a condom. Or just maybe it was the wrapping off a large rubber covered cigar? One lives in hope.

Love,

Condom could had been used for disabling the alarm.

Anyways, I wonder if the planes have ash trays in them and if the plane is Chartered, could it then be allowed to be smoked in?

When I flew from Sochi to St. Petersburg, Aeroflot was still allowing customers to smoke. What was interesting (or perhaps not surprising) was that they specifically said "no smoking on this flight" when they were doing to briefing, but as soon as we were in the air, there were about half a dozen passengers lighting up. None of the FAs said a word to them.

I actually found a butt in the ashtray of an SU A321 SVO-AMS a couple of weeks ago, so I guess some folks STILL smoke in the lavs.

One trick I heard from a FedEx captain is to put an unlubricated condom over the smoke detector, and smoke into the toilet bowl (since it's a vacuum, and the smoke gets sucked out over the ocean). Never tried it myself.

For a charter? No...not one operated by a commercial airline. But if it is a privately owned/corporate plane? Yes.

Erghhh, no love! It was a used one, but then again we wouldn't put it past them to make it dual purpose.

Oh yes, and the point abut the commercial airlines is not quite correct. We worked for an airline that we scheduled European service, but an aircraft that was chartered could still be opted for a smoking flight if required, and this was soften the case. (and still is) Fine! Us Crew used to have a sneaky smoke in the back galley on a business charter, just like in the good old days. Back then not a touch of service got done until a coffee and cig was consumed for energy. Even on a fifty minute flight!

Oh yes, and the post about smoking down the loo is true, but we get suspicious if the flush goes repeatedly and will have a sniff round the door and a check. We know the orange trick too, and you can't fool us by spraying perfume round or blowing it in to the sealed bin. Those days of a cheery fag after dinner are over!
