Sjoerd,

I just this minute went to Google and typed in "Dutch toilets."

This is an icky story, so be warned.. slightly OT - last time I was in Amsterdam, I had a case of severe diarrhoea. The only loo I could find was in some Burger King restaurant in the centre of the city. Of course it had an attendant and you had to pay her 50 euro cents to use it. She stood right outside the door as I went, it must have sounded like the bombing of Dresden in there and it absolutely stunk!

As I opened the door to walk out, it must have hit her like a blast furnace and she swooned and started swearing at me in Dutch.. lucky I don't speak Dutch..

I don't know...but the same thing seems to happen to me.

I think it's caused by an updraft due to the heat of the shower causing the air to rise and cool air to be drawn under the bottom of the curtain. Curtains with magnets on the bottom seem to help, as do curtains with two layers (one, usually a plastic, in the tub and one outside of it).
