I can accept that some people find it gross, especially with regards to those who's feet are less freshly pedicured... but Health Hazard? Exactly what do you think might be living on my socks that poses a hazard to your health.. unless maybe you have a tendency to rub your open wounds against it?

You should consider staying at home... though that may be a danger to your safety and welfare as well.

Once I would turn and look the other way now if someone is doing something that comes into my space that they should not be that certain person is told in no uncertain terms what I think. I am sick of rude and selfish people on flights.

Haha.. yeah, people on public transport are gross.

I managed a great faux par recently: I was in a real rush to leave the house after sleeping in so i grabbed the first pair of socks i could find - proper religious ones (holy.)

Unfortunately I didn't count on having to take my shoes off for exray - how embarrassing - it was morning rush hour at Man - :(

Well, feet can get "gross" and lemme tell ya, it sucks and there's sometimes not much that can be done about it.

Right now, my own feet--even though I do everything to stay clean and healthy--have some issues that I would not like to expose the rest of the population to. I'm not proud of it but it's there and I have to deal with it til it's not there. If anyone reading has any issues like mine, then you know that the medical world has several possible ways to deal with the issues but often times there is no CURE for any of this. Sadly, as with granny's olde time country rememdy, even in 2007, it's luck or time or nothing.

Right now, I have dried skin on the heels and cracked skin that can flake or itch, and while I'm somoetimes compelled to "pick it" I know that's so wrong so I avoid doing it. Also, my right foot (only) has something like Exema on it or Siriusis, but as we speak the doctors I have seen have not yet figured it out, and that makes me bummed out. And lastly, everyone gets a bit of athlete's foot or toe now and then and I have had a bit between my little toes from time to time, but some Tinactin can clear it up. Some people are even worse though. With that, fortunately, I have never had it that bad even when running a lot.

I have seen 4 specialists in 3 hospitals. I have probably spent $200 on creams and perscriptions even at the discount rates you get thru insurance at your local pharmacy, and those $15 co-pay vists also do add up as well.

All of this has only come up in the past 6-8 months and I have NO idea why! Along with the foot irritations I am experiencing out of the blue now, the fact I have no clue why it's happening to me in itself is bugging me to no avail. WHY?!?!?!

No history of anything in my family, no single event or situation I can point a finger on that could have triggered anything, and no odd or strange behavior or dietary changes that could have been the reason. The ONLY thing I have done that could even come close to "getting something" would be when you have to walk thru security at the airport with just socks on. I have always protested it, mentioned how wrong I think it is, and tried to be quick to deal with it, but like many of you regular travelers, I have done that a bunch of times in the past half year. (The TSA should provide a very steril environment there and offer creams, etc too. I bring my own)

For me, though, any/all other barefoot or sock-foot walking has been in my house or on the beach, but again, 6 months ago, beaches werent beachable in my area and the floors in my house is always pretty clean. I have decent slippers and shoes too.

I would not want to PROMOTE my currently "sick" feet to others and I certainly would appreciate it if others acted the same way about their own foot issues around me. For this reason, if you see me socks-only on a plane, I have my feet under my hip on my seat or I have them resting on top of my own shoes on the floor. If I need to stretch whilst flying, I put on my shoes and get up and walk around. I am saying all of this because I WISH people would wake up to the fact that the actions of others affect us all and that it all comes around to bite you in the end if you don't consider this. Am I gonna get the "ewww MM yer gross" thing now or will people start to think about it and spread the advice to others: BE courteous, health conscious and realistic!

oh well.

As you know I am barefoot whenever possible. I was sitting in one of those seats where you face the other on a prop this weekend and I made a special effort to try to avoid sticking me feet in front of the pax in front of me but it was rather difficult given the fact we were facing each other in a cramped prop plane.

It may surprise you, but I find people's feet repulsive if they primarily wear shoes. Their feet are thin, pale, flabby looking, just really yucky. My feet are strong, muscular (as much as feet get muscle -- most muscle is in the calf not the foot but there are muscles in feet) never moldy or anything. They do sometimes have dirt on the soles that I can't scrub off especially if I've been walking on city streets. But I assure you they do not smell at all.

I only wear shoes on takeoff and landing (for safety in case we had to evacuate with a cabin fire or some such hazard) and of COURSE when going to the restroom. Otherwise I'm barefoot on a plane.

I do try to be considerate but I am just saying that it is really the *condition* of the feet that, to me, make them repulsive or not.

Marathon Man May 14, 2007 7:22 am

people should make a practice of airing their feet out (on their own time or at the beach or home, etc) because it is more natural for the skin, etc to be exposed to the elements. But hey, this whole thread makes me cringe when I think about anyone who has a foot fetish. You know, ya see it in movies where the guy is sucking on the lady's toes or something...

Like eeewwwwwwwwwww!

Ok, at least I do keep my feet freshly pedicured and moisturized, especially with sandal season upon us. If I had that scaley, flakey, yellow-nailed stuff going on, I'd personally make sure no one ever had to look at them.

In my experience, those folks that wear the Tevos seem to think footcare is obsolete because they are wearing such "practical" shoes! YUCK.

I had a dolt next to me in FC take his shoes off, feet smelled like a monkey took a crap on them and then proceeded to clip his finger nails the last 15 minutes of the flight.

He also had a bag twice allowed size that the GA could have cared less about.

How's this for a partial solution? Ask the airlines to post a sign on the bulkhead: 'please do not place bare feet on bulkhead wall'.

Sure, some people will ignore it. However, it may... just may... open some peoples' eyes as to how disgusting that is.

I also take my shoes off as soon as we're in the air - and let my socks breathe. I always put them on again if I get up! No yucky bathroom floors for MY socks. Of course, the bathroom liquid contains ammonia - it could kill whatever I picked up walking through the security line :P

SCChris May 23, 2007 1:41 pm

HA actually has a sign on their bulkheads (at least in the 717) saying 'no feet on the bulkheads'.
