American Candy Bars
 

We're wanting to take a little gift basket over to surprise some friends in Europe, they're German. we want to fill the basket with American candy. Last time we were in Germany a porter at the hotel thought we were military and asked us if we could please buy him some Hershey candy bars at the base. We laughed and told him we were just tourists, but he went on about how good Hersheys are and you can't get them in Germany, only on the US bases. Anyhow, from your experiences in Europe what other US candy bars are Europeans fond of that they can't get over there?

I don't understand why anyone would prefer milk chocolate over dark chocolate. :confused:

My cousins grew up in London, and were hopelessly addicted to twinkies. Whenever they would visit, their suitcases were stuffed with twinkies for the flight home. Personally, I think they taste like plastic, blech! :confused:

After visiting SF, I would always welcome See's chocolate brought over! It's not one of the big names, but is excellent. I would agree that Ghirardelli is a good option, particularly if you want the name behind it.

Hershey, though, yeuch, it tastes of soap!

I had a secretary in London who loved Hersheys with almonds. I never understood this, as Europe has chocolate which is vastly superior.

I take See's nut chocolates to friends, since it was requested by one.

Go for the Ghirardelli!! I'm not a big fan of See's...

I've been in the UK for the past three weeks. I'm heading home for a week and a half before heading back to the UK. As I was leaving the office, everyone asked me to bring back jelly beans. I also got the jelly bean request when I was living in Spain and would go home to the US for a visit.

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are also almost impossible to get in Europe

My relatives that live overseas always are asking about M&Ms.

Thats like saying, I cant understand why someone would live in NY? Its different strokes for different folks.

Hershey is the only request I get when I visit the UK. I usually pick up a box of them on my way to the airport. I forget the name of the box, something like "Golden Assortment". Also well received are Hershey miniatures. If I was visiting children, I might be looking for full size candy bars. Adults seem to prefer their chocolate one bite at a time; they just keep going back for one more and one more and one more. :D I prefer Cadbury's. I guess it's all a matter of wanting what you can't have.

My body and dark chocolate don't mix well, I'll have to run to the bathroom within about 30 minutes of eating dark chocolate! Milk chocolate on the other hand has no negative effect on my body. Sorry if that was too much information, but you did ask why anyone would prefer milk chocolate! :)

American chocolate has a lot more sugar in it, we also have a lot more variety on the shelves so it's easy to see why someone might be only able to find something they really carve in the US.

Not a candy bar, but I love Junior Mints.

Who's gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It's chocolate, it's peppermint-- it's delicious!

M&Ms are found everywhere in Europe, so don't bother bringing them. Every European I have ever given a Reese Peanut Butter cup LOVES them! As an American who has lived in Europe for the last six years, I still miss them. My kids miss strawberry twizzlers.
