Godiva are good when you've got children at your feet, and wonder how you manage to make ends meet.

(Quite nice Belgian chocolates, but there are better ones out there with less well-known names.)

Actually, Frangos do still exist and are sold at a lot of Macy's locations. And no matter where they're made, you're right, they're tasty stuff.

After reading this whole thread all I can say is that I want a chocolate bar. :D

haha, yeah every time I pass by the Godiva stand I think, "maybe I should try it." Then I go, "That's too much for a candy bar." And never go through with it.

You can't get more American than Hershey's chocolate. I would probably buy an assortment of it.

Last week in HNL I noticed the Japanese tourists doing some major stock up on candy of all type - not just chocolate. I wonder if it's not a new fad - bring home American junk food :) :) :) :)

I would also mix in some other types of candy besides chocolate.

I would want to include Dagoba Xocolatl Bars. All of the flavors are interesting, but this is one for those who like the savory side of chocolate.

I would have suggested Ethel M liquor filled chocolates (bourbon and rum), but the company seems to be in a transition. Still, the Cocktail Collection seems fun, if pricey.

For just a candy bar--Milky Way Midnight.

As a person stuck in Taiwan. I am craving for Peanut Butter Cups, O Henry and Mars bars.

They sell Godiva, Ghirardelli and other high end brands but very little selection of a pure American sugar fix.

Its not the quality issue. Its the taste you grew up with and the memories it brings back. I miss home.

Bring an assortment of Hershey's if you want to show how gross American chocolate can be. That stuff tastes like it's full of wax. You'll just confirm every stereotype about American food quality.

The peanut butter suggestion is a decent one as peanut buttery stuff is hard to find most places in Europe.

However, unless you're quite sure your friends will like American chocolate, that is not the item I would bring to them as a gift. Most American chocolate tastes so cheap and awful compared to European stuff at the same price range.

I just returned from a weekend in Munich. My German friend specifically asked me to bring "Amerikan candies". I did. She and her friends seemed orgasmically satisfied with them. Was she faking it? I say "no".

Here's a second for Oreos. Our French friends specifically request them, when we visit.

I second the previous nominations of Junior Mints and Milky Way Midnight (dark chocolate). Also consider Milk Duds and Chuckles for some quintessentially American concoctions.
