Help with filling out a Lost Baggage Claim form

Newbie at this procedure and looking for assistance.

It has been 72 hours and have been informed time to file the "extended version" of the Lost Baggage Claim form. I assume this is a pretty generic claim form with EU/US airlines following the Montreal Convention.

The form is asking for receipts to document value of goods. Fortunately I do have some receipts for goods purchased online, and a few other receipts, but some of the items I just cannot locate the receipts. How do I document these other accessories, beauty products, clothing items? Put an estimate of value as I remember the prices (some were brand new and unopened!)?

The sad part is I have heard that the cost will be depreciated by 50%, even if the goods are brand new!

Secondly, I have trip insurance coverage for a very modest amount--$250 USD, less than the value of the items in the suitcase. The Claim Form is asking if I have trip insurance. I have read elsewhere that if I answer "yes" on the claim form that I have trip insurance coverage, the airlines will not process the claim, instead (wrongfully assuming) that the insurance will cover everything, which it will not. How should I proceed?

Sorry for posting here but don't know where else to go.

Cross posting is against FT t&c's
Your TAP thread is the best to get answers.

This is not a Cross Posting. My question, above, could be applied to any airline, domestic or international. I am requesting advice on how to proceed on filing a standard form issued by most airlines under the Montreal Convention. I am sure there are many other individuals who are not TAP passengers and who would like to know the answer to this question, and to ask this question on the TAP forums would be doing other non-TAP pax a disservice, as they might never see the answers.

My question on the TAP forum was specific to an EU airline and a specific situation. That specific situation no longer applies.

If a Mod can help in finding the correct place on the Forum for this question I would appreciate it greatly.

Questions about travel insurance are addressed in the Travel Products forum http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-products-639/

Your questions would be answered well in this thread:

Hi Elizadoo, I agree that this is not cross-posted, but the above referenced threads will most likely be a great resource for your question. The consolidated threads contain a vast wealth of knowledge. I'm going merge this thread accordingly.

Ever have your "lost" luggage re-surface after two weeks?

Daughter put in a claim (with very itemized inventory) of all items in her suitcase, down to the teeniest item in her toiletries case, tweezers.

It has now been two weeks since her big pink suitcase went missing somewhere between Orly and Miami, with a layover in Lisbon, via TAP. She is heartbroken, as the best of her clothing and all souveniers are in the luggage. She doesn't care about compensation, she wants the items she purchased on her travels.

Is there any hope of recovery?

Does someone actually look for this large, bright pink suitcase? According to TAP Portugal, the suitcase never made the trip to Lisbon, so it would be in Orly--or so one would hope. Do people at the ORY airport search for the luggage, in a lost-and-found type room?

It would be helpful if someone could outline the search procedure. Daughter has delayed buying any new clothes, toiletries, and shoes, as she goes into week three of waiting.

You have posted about the same incident and the problems which ocurred when the bag arrived at MIA. Why don't you ask a Moderator to close this thread and then continue the other thread as you will get more useful information if you stick to one place.

Aeroflot - no response

Our luggage got lost in a Delta (from MSP) to Aeroflot (to Moscow) change in AMS. It was delivered 5 days later to our cruise ship, 1 hr before departure. Needless to say, we had had to buy some clothes and supplies in Moscow.

Aeroflot gave us a contact address ([email protected]), but despite numerous claim submissions to that address we have receive no response. Not a word. This happened in June

Any suggestions? Is there a higher Skyteam authority one could appeal to?

I flew AA RDU-ORD-BOS on 12/25 and then BA BOS-LHR-BRU on 12/25-26 on the same ticket. According to AA's baggage tracking app, my bag made it to BOS okay. The bag did not make it to BRU with me. I filled out a form and was given a case number. The bag did not arrive at BRU until 4:30 PM on the 27th...I had arrived at BRU at 9 AM on the 26th. By the time it arrived I had moved onto Paris. It took until 9:45 PM on the 28th for the bag to arrive in Paris because it was sent BRU-LHR-CDG.

I had to spend close to 300 Euros on clothes, a new bag, shoes and toiletries. I have submitted claims to BA for that and we'll see what happens.

Air France damaged my suitcase. Filled out the report and took it to the store they sent me to (local one in Israel). Instead of fixing it, they told me to just choose a new bag. Now I'm nervous because:

1. I had a decent bag (Delsey) and never heard of this new one (Antler, apparently a British company) though they were saying it's a well regarded bag, and actually costs more than I initially paid for my suitcase (but in America)
2. My bag came with a warranty. They gave me a brand new bag. Does that mean I no longer have a warranty on my bag (not that I've ever used it, as most damage comes from the airline who is liable)?

Did I make a mistake by just taking the bag?

ETA: No compensation was offered, requested, or received. I'm not looking for compensation other than a working suitcase (which hopefully I now have)! I'm actually quite thankful that the process was quick and painless - just hoping I didn't make a mistake...or if I did, that it's fixable!

Lost at EWR

I had a domestic flight that was delayed so when I got to the check in counter with my bag (with a Elite baggage tag with my name on it) for an international flight I was told the bag would not make it through security in time , but it would go on the next flight. Apparently the agent finished her shift and did not tell anyone, they found the bag three days later and three further days later it was sent to go on its flight, but it never made it to the plane, because TSA refused to let it through security (apparently the food that was now rotten and smelly was not removed from the bag as requested). I am now being told that the bag was "probably thrown out" even though the bag with food was enclosed in a separate freezer bag. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Do they really throw out entire bags with valuable items in them when there is something smelly elsewhere in the bag?

Reporting my experience with BA at BLR (Bengaluru / Bangalore) in case it's helpful to anyone else. Arriving at BLR after a 6-hour layover at LHR, my single checked suitcase didn't make it and the baggage desk folks in the baggage claim area told me it was still at Heathrow. (BA had sent ahead a list of passengers whose bags they knew would not make it.) These were employees of KIAL, the airport, not BA. I was assured the bag would arrive the following morning. They have a generic (non-airline-specific) form to fill out, including local contact information and a description of the contents. I was not asked for receipts or anything else for the contents of the bag, even though I put down several hundred dollars' worth of photo equipment that I could have produced a receipt for. I was advised to keep receipts of anything I bought (clothes and such) that I needed to buy if I wanted BA to reimburse me for those expenses. Next the form had to be taken to the Customs officials for some rubber stamps and a quick review. (My bag did not have anything that needed duty paid.) I had to sign another form authorizing release of the bag when it arrived to Customs for inspection and thereafter to the local courier who would be in charge of delivering the bag when it came.

Later that day I got some sort of generic e-mail note from BA that didn't say much but directed me to a missing baggage web page that seemed more or less non-functional in that I couldn't actually do anything on it except follow some links for general information. The following morning I got a call on my mobile phone from the courier agency saying they had my bag and confirming the hotel address to deliver the bag. It showed up by noon. (It did not appear to have been opened by Customs, although they doubtless X-rayed it as incoming bags often are in India.) A day later I uploaded receipts for clothes/cosmetics I bought on the first day to BA's site. The only option for reimbursement seemed to be a direct bank transfer (ABA routing for US accounts, SWIFT for anywhere else). The reimbursement (< $200) did show up a week or so later. Overall pretty painless, except for the confusion of BA then sending me multiple e-mail messages a few days after the flight informing they had "been notified of missing bags" and would I please submit all information again. I ignored those messages.

Long story short

SQ lost my bag I made some purchases and use credit card insurance for part of it, but inside bag was also to valued items designer shoes, jacket and also bag cost over 200usd
can I claim both things from airline (necessary purchases - compensation from credit card , items inside bag) or not ?

I got this answer from airline
flight was from UK where I'm based if its mater....and flight was when we where in EU....not any more ;)
"Thank you for your email.

If we may clarify, you may only submit one claim to the airline: either for the items purchased or for the missing bag.

Informatively it is in the passenger’s interest to ensure that the documentation submitted is complete and the information provided is true and correct.

Passengers are required to sign the baggage claim form to declare that all the foregoing information is accurate.

As you have submitted your claim on the baggage claim form for the items purchased we have considered this claim.

Therefore, we would suggest you pursue any further claims with your travel insurers.

Kind regards"

A fool and his checked bag are soon parted.

I will never check a bag unless I absolutely have to. The airlines don't really care about your stuff and there is no real practical way to enforce the laws that are on the books, at least for US passengers.
