I have a question on one of them, and a comment on the other...
I've found that I simply cannot handle a 10 hour flight unless I've had a couple cigarettes beforehand. But several posters here are right about the odor afterwards... my sweater will definitely smell like smoke. That being said, short of putting on cologne to "mask" it (which, IMHO, is even more offensive), anyone have any super thoughts on remedies (other than suggestions to quit smoking, which I'm working on)? As for the comment... I do turn my cell phone on as soon as the airplane is parked at the gate (while waiting for the jetbridge). Why is my use of my cell phone more annoying than people who use the AirPhone mid-flight? While it's true that many people need to learn how to speak quietly even into a telephone, this goes for all kinds of phones. As long as there are AirPhones on planes, I don't see how singling out cell phones is logical. Just my -$3.98 (2 cents minus the $4 PFC)[/B][/QUOTE] The difference between you, my firend , and the majority of people who have both addictions (maybe you were Italian in a previous life!) is that you have the sensitivity and coutesy to reocect the fact that smell and noise are the by-products of both. I hate people smoking around me, and I hate the aftersmell on people's clothes. However, I do try and judge a book by more than it's cover, and if you were to board and say "Sorry for the smell" my immediate reaction is just to ignore it, and in an aeroplane one's sense are soon dimmed. Cologne and peppermints are the only answer if it embarasses you. For my part, I'd rather you and your jumper and maybe a pleasant chat over a drink before lunch than a lot of other things. In the days when smoking was allowed on British Airways,2 rows only were assigned to Club Europe. One row was non-smioke the other was smoking. (Ridiculous). The person next to me was obviously a smoker. He was so well mannered that I had to say "Go ahead and have a cigarette" so concerned was he at bothering me with his cigarette smoke. He was a most congenial companion (from Houston) and the 2 hours from Verona to Gatwick just flew by. |
What really annoys me is when I've had people sitting next to me (both in coach and in first) who have music blasting so loud out of their headphones/cd players that I can hear the music clearly for the whole flight also. Ugh!

Although I'm finding this tread hilarious, I do have to stick up for those babies with poopy diapers. They have to go sometime! I have 4 children - oldest 23 - and a lovely granddaughter and I have yet to see a lav big enough or one that provides a changing table for babies.
Now for my own confession: when my oldest was an 6 weeks old we flew with him from ORD to Newfoundland. It was a very long two days as we were snowed in in Nova Scotia for a night. I changed a messy diaper on one of the middle seats of a DC10 and had a bit of an accident. I seem to remember scrubbing the seat with paper towels as the other passengers glared at me. Luckily for them, I disposed of the diaper in the lav garbage instead of my seat pocket. |
edited for peace and harmony on the board. I offer my apologies for having responded at all to the original poster.

Very rude for a first poster or anybody--incredible! Not even funny ..read our rules and conduct section on FT..Normally I welcome all newbies...but I have a feeling it might be too late to do that!

For years, the grossest passenger behavior I personally experienced was the used throat lozenge and crushed wrapper that someone threw into a cup of apple juice I had sitting on a galley counter. Luckily, I saw the floating "tidbits" before I took another swig! But last week, this all-time record was broken. We were helping the cabin cleaners straighten up FC on a flight that had come in late. I pulled out the seat pocket at 1B and couldn't believe my eyes. I placed a baggie over my hand, reached in and pulled out, yes, really, a wad of used chewing tobacco! Not wrapped in anything. Just the wad shoved into the seat pocket. That was even grosser than the little water bottles filled with brown goop that we find rolling in the aisles after everyone's deplaned. Believe me when I say ABSOLUTELY NOTHING can surprise me anymore.
What's the difference between a seat pocket and a trash can? Don't know? Don't feel bad. Lots of people can't tell the difference either http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ------------------ [This message has been edited by Skymaid80 (edited 07-09-2001).] |
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by RKG: buttnut, Pretty rude for a first post. I would hope that any subsequent posts are more well thought out. All people are not the same size. I consider myself slim to average and some of those seats are a bit narrow for me. By the way, this topic is about Disgusting Airline Passenger Manners, not your personal pet peeve. I guess your post is actually on topic as a perfect example of Disgusting Manners by a airline passenger - your apparent lack of manners! Have you no compassion? I can tell you it gets heavy; its not just "touching" you. I pay for MY seat, I'm sorry if you can't handle that philosophy. Sincerely, your friend, Buttnutt |
I have been accused of being rude for being upset that I spent 8 hours with someone's fat wallowing on me. I can assure you it was not just "touching" me; it was HEAVY. I will not put up with it anymore. I am polite as possible, but if they take a portion of my seat, then they should pay for it. Next, how about people who cannot help if their feet stink. I hear no whiners taking up for them and calling the complainers rude.

Now, back to my retirement...
Oh, and I have a slightly used HotDog cart for sale... Only has a few flames on it... No reasonable offer refused... I thought that taking 2 months off posting might rekindle my interest in FT, but ignorant people really don't do a lot for me... Oh well, maybe a few more months will do me good. Village Idiot,
Completely unrelated to the flaming here, come out of "retirement". We miss your commentary! [This message has been edited by Craig6z (edited 07-10-2001).] |
I too was hoping villageidiots link to the "penthouse" type incredible story worked. Call me sick, twisted, deranged, morally challenged, perverted, anyone of which will work. But that experience doesn't belong in this thread, it belongs in the "How I Had The Best Flight of My Life" thread. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif And the lone gunman gaspasser who just happens to be sitting next to me is definitely up there as grossest, at least in a confined space.
I know this isn't a pet peeve thread, but this still qualifies as bad manners too. The person who doesn't fly too often in the bulkhead seat in front me, shoving their "stuff" under my seat. I ask them very politely to remove it and get in an argument just about every time. And to Paul Palmer, a small bottle of Febreze would actually help alot, and should fit easily in a carry-on. It has no scent and neutralizes foul odors quickly and effectively. I have 2 dogs and through many mishaps has worked great. Just a thought. Another "thread closed" in the making, I'm afraid! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
C'mon, as noted above, "play nice.." please! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
