Up to 2 miles to walk at Gatwick?!
I just flew from Gatwick to Zurich on BA last Saturday. We flew from gate 111 in the North Terminal which seemed very far from the check-in area.
I was the last in the line and chatted with the gate officer, wondering why we were using the furthest terminal on what appeared to be a slow day. First he joked that it was to build up a hunger for the marvelous meal they were going to serve us. (Good joke... that marvelous meal consisted of tea or coffee and mixed nuts). But he then got serious and did mention that this was not the furthest gate. Apparently gate 46 which is hardly ever used is a 2 mile walk from the check-in area. That is if you don't use the occaisional moving walkway. He said they calculate 30 minutes for the crew to get there. QUESTION Does anyone know if there is a gate that is further from the check-in or the baggage claim. SM |
Some of the piers at Heathrow terminal 3 are quite a hike.
|
That is one loooong airport.
I think my last run across Frankfurt *felt* longer though. |
According to gmap-pedometer, the distance to gate 46 is about half a mile. By contrast, the furthest gate at LHR T3 is about 0.6 miles, and the distance from the B to the G gates at AMS about 1.25.

I've walked the entire length of BCN once - that seemed to go on forever (our gate was one of the furthest "west" (I assume an east-west orientation, but have absolutely no idea!) in A, and I'd to walk down to B to meet some FTer who were waiting for me.....
The Victors in LHR T4 are a hike as well, and it's odds on you are departing from them if pushed for time :( |
It just seems like 2 miles!
The long hike at MIA takes me 30 minutes. |
Some other long walks.
SIN from arrival gate F60 to QF gate far end of T1 to meet someone. NRT from one end of T2 to other (although you do have about 20 moving walkways en route, each with the annoying little jingle walkway coming to an end, watch your step). |
Some very long hikes in MSP
|
I imagine HKG tot he end of the Ys of the pier would be a pretty long hike if there wasn't the train or walkways.
What's the length of the McNamara (NW) terminal at DTW? |
I remember the walk through AMS' terminal taking forever. It felt like a good mile or so... Check in at CVG to Concource C at the DL terminal has got to be over a mile.

SM Regarding NW at DTW, I remember the publicity when that new terminal opened and they were touting that that terminal was at least a mile long IIRC. |

There are some pretty long inter-terminal walks, if you're counting them (though perhaps not many that you can do entirely airside). Nobody's experienced the full charm of Heathrow until they've navigated the tunnels under the bus station. And we'll have to look back nostalgically on the long (hot) walkway at Don Muang. |

I seem to recall that arriving at the gates BA use at MUC and then walking the length of the terminal to the car rental area is quite a hike. Took at least 10 minutes brisk walking so would be about 0.5 mile. I agree on the LHR T4 Victor gates - my last 4 flights from T4 have used these  . They are a loooong way from security and it is virtually guaranteed one or all of the moving walkways are always inoperative as well. |
