Making up false security directives should be grounds for immediate termination. |

Cell phones don't cause static charge. Static charge does cause fires, as the article points out, and cell phones are sometimes blamed instead. However, this could be the explanation for the behavior mentioned in the OP, if the GA or whoever believed that it was true. Sorry, too slow on the "submit" sorry for the dupe pointer. :) |
Given the op's thread-topic and the direction thread has gone, am moving to Travel Buzz.

Sorry - thought UA would be a good place as it was a UA GA or ground agent who gave me the information...didn't know if it was an 'airline' policy or not.
Cheers~ |
No need to be sorry. The discussion took on a wider life than just UA :)

I assume that's the source of the question. |

Yes, the Navy has had accidents with this sort of thing over the years, and has evolved a protocol known as HERO - Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance. Certain transmitters must be off aboard ship while ammo is being moved, loaded, etc.

Wow that's crazy. Never knew that.
Remind me to stay away with my cell phone next time :) |

Needless to say, I continued taking pictures as I knew this lady was full of it. She drove by a bit later and gave me another speech, and I asked her since when this rule existed. She said that "my president" has had it ever since 9/11. Fun times!
