Anyway ... thanks to you I'm also going to packing an air-tight container and bringing home cupcakes from New York next month. I wonder if they will taste as good here as they do on the streets on Manhattan ... Thanks for this mouth-watering thread.

No problem, Letiole. Do tell us how everything goes. :)

Then you should really start a thread in the New York forum, and get our stomachs rumbling! :p

FTers want to do what they can to travel home with cupcakes from New York? What makes them so great here that it's better to fly home with them than to get them truly fresh from your local bakeries?

I think it's knowing the fact that New York has very good everything.

Also worth noting -

Cupcake Cafe: 9th ave and 39th street - VERY buttery icing... very good rep, but I find that if you miss and catch them the wrong day they can be a bit stale. They do pretty extraordinary decoration on the cupcakes and big cakes as well.

Billie's Bakery: 9th Ave around 20th or 21st - also get raves, but I've had misses there as well.

Happy Eating.

I like Little Cupcake a lot! I've never been to Leon's though so I can't compare. Their Red Velvet cupcakes are good and their specialty, although I prefer their regular old yellow cake cupcakes with chocolate frosting. They have other varieties as well as (very good and fresh) full size cakes by the slice. All have that homemade feel to it. But again, never been to Leon's...

Probably nothing ... I think that story said it pretty well, there's really not much to making a good cupcake ... but like anything you bring home from a trip it allows you to savor the trip a little longer. :)

I'll make it a point to go try this one out, thank you. :)

I've never thought about it that way, but it definitely makes sense. ^

You know, you CAN get good cupcakes in the Detroit area... Zingerman's bakery in Ann Arbor has really great hummingbird cupcakes (banana, pineapple, walnut) with cream cheese frosting and sprinkles!

I've heard about their tasty carrot cupcakes, but where in Ann Arbor are they?

Zingerman's Deli is on the corner of Detroit St and Kingsley St (just northwest of the U of M campus but an easy walk). There are good directions on their website (www.zingermans.com). They also have a bakehouse (where the breads and pastries are actually made) just off State Street south of I-94. They do bakehouse tours every weekend which are quite interesting if you're a foodie.

I remember this place! The florist we used for our wedding was located right next door. While I never walked inside, I always thought its name was adorable.

Thanks, but the website doesn't work. :(

It is a huge fad - which I think is pretty amusing. I second the recommendation for Crumbs. The UES location is right by my apt and they are yummy.

Will they survive the journey?

I regularly travel SYD-BNE with a carton of Krispy Kreme stowed safely either under the seat in front, or in the coat closet (be nice to your FA!).

On multiple occasions, I've had good success transporting cheesecakes from SFO to SIN via HKG without issue ^
