Back to the OP question. I would go to a local supermarket, one with a bakery and ask if I could have a couple of their plastic cupcake holders. I'd then transfer the special ones you're buying into the more secure holder, then put that in a Glad container and keep it under the seat.

One place I can recommend (although I don't know how well they travel) is the Buttercup Bake Shop which is in my neighborhood. The cupcakes are still small there (I think!) and they are delicious. Moreover, the staff is helpful and curteous. http://www.buttercupbakeshop.com

You're absolutely right, the bakeries are making them bigger to compete with one another. I WILL go around tasting cupcakes when I find the time, thanks.

I just took a peek at the Buttercup Bake Shop website, and the carrot cake sounds good. I've always been a big fan of carrot cake!

Is the 9" one available walk-in, or do I need to call in advance? I might end up bringing one of THOSE to Detroit with me. :D

It's a rough job, but someone has got to do it. ;)

Just when I think I've seen everything FT has to offer, I see this thread on how to properly travel with cupcakes. I continue to be impressed. ^

If you are ever in Brooklyn and you want Magnolia/Buttercup cupcakes without the attitude or ultra-hipness go to Little Cupcake in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Owner used to work at Buttercup - he actually got sued by by ex-owner of Magnolia/current Buttercup owner but won. All the cupcake places are related to one another, it's incestuous!

yes, this was an interesting thread subject. As was "travelling in a gorilla suit" some time ago.

Mel,

On the dhammer53 Brooklyn Reality Tour linked below, I usually stop at Leon's on Knapp Street for bakery goodies. Answer me this one question, 'how much do you really love Littlle Cupcake'?
I could be pursuaded to make a change. ;)

I'm supposed to be on a diet, oh dear. :p

I'll be flying in on CX, and leaving the next morning, so I can only call them a few hours in advance. Is that okay?

hair,

Between the hotdog thread, and this thread, you're making me hungry.

When are you coming to NYC? I may want to join you for a snack. :D

A few years back, my wife and I carried a box of Krispy Kreme donuts from SFO to Butte, Montana (our decision to do this was a piece of poor judgment inspired by the sugar rush caused by KK over-indulgence on the way to the airport). The biggest issue we had was an argument with the TSA who wanted to count the box as an additional carry on item, putting us over the limit. Fortunately, in our sugar-fuelled frenzy we were able to prevail and maintain possession of our bounty.

April something, and I'll be back every month after that up until August. :D

That is so tragic. TSA = horrible beyond mortal comprehension.

hairpiece: I must say you've inspired me, as has that whole article posted upthread about the bakery battles. I love Magnolia Bakery's cupcakes, but don't know if they're really better than what I can get at Citizen Cupcake or if they just seem better because I'm away from home. Anyway ... thanks to you I'm also going to packing an air-tight container and bringing home cupcakes from New York next month. I wonder if they will taste as good here as they do on the streets on Manhattan ... Thanks for this mouth-watering thread.

Try a taste test with hairpiece's recommendation of Sugar Sweet Sunshine if you're going to be on the Lower East Side--I agree that those are quite good. (and let me know if you need a guide to the eating establishments of lower Manhattan and the Village--my friends often tell me I should switch jobs!)

Will do. Thanks!

This has GOT to be some kind of a fad.

FTers want to do what they can to travel home with cupcakes from New York? What makes them so great here that it's better to fly home with them than to get them truly fresh from your local bakeries?
