Flew into BUD last July, and well I waited and waited for a decent fare paid $1200 RT and well, since EUrope is hot in the summer for tourists, I wouldn't expect to have many good deals, if not worse prices since bookings for Europe are already up even more than last year already....also getting to Eastern Europe is more popular since it's more affordable. Flying into London and doing a LCC might be an idea but didn't seem worth it.
But have a great time, it was AMAZING, great food, beatiful sights and just had an awesome time.

Well, like Aviatrix said, it would help if you mentioned what city you are flying from.
Assuming you are coming from the US, you could try getting a discounted ticket into a major European city (Paris, Rome, London, Amsterdam) and getting to BUD using Wizzair, which is the Central/Eastern European version of the RyanAir/Southwest ilk. An example fare is 50 euro return from Paris.
As you may be aware, the disadvantage of using a super discounted airline is that you probably won't be flying out of he major airport, but weigh that against the savings and it may make sense for you.

I flew into the BUD from IAH last summer in July via LH. Itineary was IAH-FRA-BUD-FRA-IAH. The it cost around $1150 with tax. That was the lowest Star Alliance airline fare I could find in July.

Europe in the summer IS very expensive, especially Eastern Europe. You might try using the ITA travel link and click on "month long search." That will give you some idea of the cheapest flights to a given city for the time frame you need.
