I've bought many Tumi pieces from my local outlet and at that time they were covered by both the warrantee and Tumi Tracer program. In the past year or two, I believe the outlets may have done away with the warrantees, but I thought they still participated in the Tracer program. Next time I am there, I'll look to see if the barcodes are blacked out or if the Tracer cards are still inside.
The outlets aren't as well priced as they used to be. I purchased a 22" rollaboard there a few years ago for $212 and now they are going for $349 (similar but not identical item # but the same in every way). I was there a few weeks ago and I eyed a garment bag for under $200 as well as a golf bag similarly priced. They were having a 25% off sale which made the prices nice. Otherwise, the deals were not as fantastic as they have been in the past. They did have some good deals on some T3 silver items (under $100) but I only go for basic black. As others have said, if you like the odd colors, you can often find some deals. Lately, I have had equally good luck in finding Tumi at my Saks Off 5th stores, as well as Century 21, Marshalls and TJMaxx (where I grabbed a $200 expandable flap messenger bag for $18, with warrantee and Tracer). Marshalls also had tons of Tumi wallets for around $20. |
one of the crowd
I won't buy Tumi simply because every "road warrior" "business person" seems to carry one - it seems too cliche to me. I use a Prada laptop bag and Gucci overnight (read 3-day) duffel and both hold up well.

I don't have a big one - I have a 20" wheelaboard and a matching expandable duffle bag that can be scrunched inside the wheelie but holds almost as much as the wheelie when unzipped. I love the colors, and I've received compliments on my bags, but I don't think I would pay full price for them. They are very strong, but not indestructible, and after one trip, there were some minor scratches in the alloy-colored rubber buffer spots, and also scuffs in the ballistic fibers which are now visible when looking at the wheelie from a certain angle. Also, they use some sort of foam padding between the exterior nylon and interior lining, which, on mine, was apparently unfolded because you can see these small, faint vertical indentations running half the length of the top of my wheelie. Not a big deal, but not what I expect out of such luggage - and I'm not even all that abusive with it. If you can get Tumi on sale, do it - otherwise, I really like Ricardo Beverly Hills which has gotten better over time, IMHO.

Neiman Marcus Clearance center has Tumi discounted, I can't recall, I'm sure it's at least 25% off.

I have a 22 incher i take along with my gucci laptop bag. I didn't like their laptop bags (to business like..im only 18!) After travelling with this bag about 60k miles in the last few months it does not seem to be as durable as my travelpro 22 incher. Still it is a nice bag and gets the job done.
