I have never had much use for the Green Line/College Park -- like the hinterlands of the E-train. But at least the E-train has more uses. :D

See below: 7 a.m. .... but still not useful for first flights out of IAD or even DCA.

I take the Green line from College Park now and it doesn't stink anymore, nor have I seen any homeless yet. It's also one line now.

I think they open earlier now on Saturdays.

New York is good because of the four track express system.

Paris is good because the trains come very frequently.

The Green Line has improved over the years, or so I've heard. It appears that Saturday AND Sunday is 7 a.m. as of more recently. Didn't even notice that before. :)

I really like my own metro, where a station is just a few blocks away in Universal City, CA....

It seems there is no regularity with the Metro. Why does the red line start after 8am on Sundays? :confused: Is DC that much of a government town that people can't get into town early on a Sunday morning?? :D

What is there to do in DC on a Sunday morning? Besides brunch or some outdoor activities, not a whole lot.

In terms of schedule and staff, NYC MTA is a class act compared to the WMATA clowns. Some months the Washington Metro drivers cannot even manage to stop at the station platforms even on their second or third try. Still, the WMATA "cars" and stations are like BA-league in comparison to most of the NYC MTA's physical product which is more like NorthWorst-league.

I'd rather not wait on a platform for 20 or so minutes in the middle of the night. Just cab it. :D

Well you wouldn't have to because they adhere to their schedule. :D My husband often has to be at his office on LI very early in the morning so he takes the E to Jamaica to catch the LIRR. Taking a taxi instead would break the bank.

i get the "luxury" of the N/W or as i like to call it "never working" train.

as for nights.. i am strategically placed in queens 5 mins off the 59th bridge so i dont have to take the subway at night and can just cab it home.

If u try to stick to that subway "schedule" ur gonna be late 90% of the time! all it takes one 1 idiot who doesnt realize their bag is blocking the door to throw that schedule off drastically!

That's precisely what they're thinking in DC. ;) You do the same things you do in NYC early on a Sunday morning. Perhaps go to an 8am service at church before you fly off someplace? ^

For the most part, the cars in DC are newer with the huge exception of the new cars on the 4, 5, 2, and 3 trains. I like those new cars. It's easier for bums to get on the NYC subway cars and deface them than it is on the DC metro. Score 1 for DC on that.

Ok, this will make me sound like a calculating nut but here goes. I did a mini-study of my morning commute and commute-time using the subways. The data I got about the variability and timing of my commute -- and routing -- suggested that my getting on a packed train was rather useless rather than waiting for the rush-hour to somewhat pass and get on an otherwise less busy train. The "just 1 idiot to cause a mess" as a reason for avoiding the packed train certainly makes sense. (My objective was not just to find the fastest commute, but also the ones that were the most reliable for scheduling purposes.)

Delhi - culture shock on exit
