Someone told me it was much more accepted in some Asian cultures, which would explain my toenail clipping & picking pool mate. Anyone have any insight or is this totally off-base?

Not in my Asian culture! :D

Given Asia is a big continent. I have often been "grossed out", and irked by various other people's behaviour whilst in Asia, as well as Europe and Australasia. It's the "sensible Anglo-philic" influence... :p

My one own recollection of a public nail clipping was fingernail on a bus. It was peak hour, and I was perturbed, to perhaps a 7/10. *sigh* She was an Asian lady - didn't ask specifically from where.... :D

Nail clipping wouldn't bother me. It would bother me if the person doing it were just letting the clippings fall on the floor instead of collecting them.

I think toe nail clipping is gross though. They should do that in private. It might not bother me as much if a woman is doing it that's wearing open shoes, but if someone removed his shoes and socks and then started doing it, I'd be grossed out.

Pretty darn gross if you ask me. Matter of fact, there's a lot of really strange things people do. One thing I don't understand, while not related to grooming, is people walking through public spaces in hotels (and airports for that matter) with no shoes on. I love a hotel that makes me feel at home, but that's a little too much. How many people do you think have walked through that lobby with who knows what on their shoes?

I once went on a road trip in college with a girl that liked to do this. I remember that we stopped for gas one time, and this girl went to use the gas station bathroom while barefooted

One of the things I would have trouble accepting is an occupation I read about once, one of the types of workers found on beaches in a particular country. Won't name it, as doing so may be seen as insulting, though that is not my intention. Just cultural differences. And we've got out own that may be unpleasant to others too. But this particular occupation, done on the beach, in front of hoards of passers by, is that of ear wax remover.

Probably not that gross to see, but if any of those dudes approached me trying to sell their services. . . . black eye territory. . . .

Me too--I don't even have to see it, just the sound makes me queasy.

The other one I love is using the electric shaver in public. A former boss who I used to sit next door to did this, and all I could think of is lots of little hairs flying all over his desk and paperwork. I found this was not uncommon in Japan, and have even seen it on the Tokyo subway! (Boss was American, but had lived in Japan for 20+ years.) I briefly considered trying the woman's revenge of hiking up my skirt and shaving my legs in public, but I guess I've got too much class. :p

You appear to be operating under the assumption that men would find that, um, offensive.

Gay men, maybe . . . :D

I'm really not as disgusted by nail clippings as some are so I'm not particularly offended by public nail clipping, although I do mine in private.

7 or maybe even 8

I think nail clipping is about a seven. Once on a bus in the Netherlands I actually said to a guy clipping his nails, "What the hell are you doing?, this is a public bus!" His stop was a short while later and he left leaving a scattered bunch of clippings on the floor. :td:

Actually I should qualify that statement, Nail clipping in an enclosed public space is what I find offensive and annoying. Someone just walking down the street or in a park clipping their nails doesn't really bother me much at all.

You are not oversensitive...

Clipping nails in public is about the most disrespectful, unrefined, uncultured, discourteous, rude thing a person can do. Because, you're leaving behind something that used to be attached to your body. Why not shave in public and leave your hair all over the place too?

Fear Factor routinely comes up with things that are a 10 on my grossness scale, so it would be unfair to say that it's a 10. But this is probably worse than not using a towel on machines at the gym. So I would give this a 6, easily. :td:

Am I oversensitive? How gross is this on a scale of 1-10?

This person wasn't brought up - they were dragged! EEEeeewwww!
(I give it a 10 on the 'Tacky, tacky, tacky' scale)

Ok, what's comes after "GROSS"????!!!! BEYOND GROSS?? GROSS TO THE 10TH??

OT: I once saw a co-worker change her baby's diaper, wash her hands, then use the toilet herself and, instead of washing her hands again when she came out of the stall said "Oh, I don't need to wash again... I just did after I changed the baby".... I wanted to run around and disinfect everything in the office :(

Nail Clipping (and public vulgarity)

7-8 out of 10 - Not too long ago a man sat next to me and clipped his nails and the clippings that didn't fly into the aisle or on the floor flew over onto my slacks which I promply and often brushed off, actually aiming them back onto his seat and pants. I asked him to stop and received a perplexed but nasty look in return, as if I was so far out of line to even ask.

This topic could broaden (or degenerate) into a fairly obnoxious and long list of vulgar behaviours that people do, especially on very long flights. I travel internationally every month and have almost ceased to be amazed at what certain members of the species (both men and women) will do.

Tacky...YES..gross...aaa not so bad...

..I'd give it a 4...maybe 7 years of living in Asia has dulled my senses, but I dont think it would gross me out that bad. Sitting by a pool in Cuba last winter we were having a conversation with a British couple regarding what's the tackiest thing you could do while travelling. Their response was the tackiest thing they had come across was American's who they had met only minutes before, telling them their life's story in intimate detail. So to each his own. However the diaper thing in the restaurant is particularily vile.
