1. Fully lock the door
2. Check bathroom
3. Turn on all lights
4. Check bed to make sure it's clean
5. Look out window for view (if there is any). If it's low down or close to a roof or climbing surface, make sure windows are locked
6. Adjust heating/AC
7. Turn on TV
8. Take off shoes
9. Light a cigarette as I've nearly always been without for at least a couple of hours and I need one by then.

Everything else gets done at my leisure. :)

#1 TOSS the card key somewhere I am sure to not find it and throw all of my stuff on the bed (yes, on top of the skanky spread).

#2 Open curtains and open the window, NO MATTER THE WEATHER! I will leave the window open the entire time unless I am on the ground floor.

#3 Adjust the ac/heat for the temperature outside (terrible, I know).

#4 Check out the bathroom, make sure it's clean of hairs from the former occupants (pet peeve).

#5 See what food is offered in the hotel at that hour. Go to the bar/dining room, order room service or go to the vending machine depending on what's available.

#6 If I am leaving for food, spend a minimum of ten minutes trying to find the card key again. :D

I stay in hotels usually one night per week in the summer, even if I am staying longer I rarely ever unpack. Typically my luggage stays on one of the beds. If it is one king bed, then the luggage stays on the bed even while I sleep! (I obviously travel alone :td: )

Now when Mr. Alison is travelling with me we have a whole different ritual that probably could be evidenced by those black lights y'all are so fond of ^

1. Spend 5 minutes trying to get keycard to open door.
2. Dump cosmetic bag and purse on bureau. Put keycard in highly visible place.
3. Look in closet for luggage rack. Put suitcase on luggage rack or other horizontal surface.
4. Check bathroom for cleanliness and towels.
5. Check bed for cleanliness. Look for extra pillows.
6. Call housekeeping for extra pillows and/or towels.
7. Check whether windows open. If weather isn't extremely hot/cold and room isn't on ground floor, open windows.
8. Check out heating/cooling system.
9. Put essential cosmetics, etc., in bathroom.
10. Hang anything that needs it in closet.
11. If and only if in London (where we always stay in the same hotel), take long, hot bubble bath.

How right you are! Worse yet is set early and alarm engaged . Lately, I have an instinctive habit of looking at the clock radio w/i first 10 mins. to see whether the light is on to indicate alarm is engaged. I bet it is 25% of the time (no exaggeration).

I pee.

(Unless I am escorted by bellperson, etc. ;) In that case, first thing is tug open curtains.)

I always ask for a room away from the lift, away from any sort of vending machine/ ice machine. If the room is noisy either from outside or through the walls, I have to change.

The bathroom/ toilet also has to be spotless and if not......I need to change room.

I also hate rooms with interconnecting doors, as I find that many have very little soundproofing.

So you see, Im not fussy at all:)

I do the same thing as I often get "welcome to hotel 123 Mr. lalala" and last I checked I was a Ms.

I have seen posted here to clean the remote control and telephone, but that is only two of the three most bacteria-infected devices in a hotel room. I am surprised nobody has mentioned the third.

SlickRick Feb 20, 2005 3:42 pm

Just messing with you guys.

The three most devices in a hotel room that has the most bacteria on them are:

1. TV remote control
2. Telephone (all of them - handset and keys)
3. Radio alarm clock

These are rarely cleaned by housekeeping. After I am done cleaning these and before I throw out the anti-bacterial wipe I bring with me, I clean the A/C controls, light switches, door knobs, locks, etc.

This may sound paranoid, but it only takes about 3 minutes for the whole routine.

(1) Carefully drag the bedspread of into the corner of the room.
(2) Place remote control inside of plastic zip lock bag

I never considered wiping down the clock and phone until now.

That's what I do, but not the chair part.

Often then I check the bathroom and flush the toilet to make sure it works. It's easier to change rooms before you've unpacked :)

I usually just come in and turn on my laptop and get connected to the internet. I don't worry about germs and such. Most of the hotels I stay in do a decent job on cleaning and the good old immune system takes care of the rest.

USA_flyer Feb 21, 2005 5:33 am

I've never worried about germs before but I am now. I will definitely be getting some lysol wipes for the remote, phone, and handles when I'm in a hotel in a couple of weeks. Even if my fiancee thinks I'm nuts doing it :p
