I believe the RNO-EKO flight was a bank run (to bring money to the bank when the miners got paid - NV was the leading gold mining state in the U.S. in the '90s). It wasn't daily about 10 yars ago. More like weekly or every 2 weeks to coincide with payday!

I've done DTW-PLN, SSM in Michigan on Mesaba and Pinnacle (NW). Aaah, the UP.

Elko's reputation has grown beyond the mining town, though - it's been voted as the best small town in the U.S. for a couple of years recently. Skywest's service RNO-EKO is three times a day right now. ;)

Nope. A quick check of Continental's website shows that to get from HPN to SYR or BUF, you have to connect in CLE. Oddly, you CAN fly nonstop from HPN to ROC on Continental.

Hmm, my fault I only did check HPN-ROC....but I have flown HPN-BUF a good 4-5 years ago while in college...this must be a recent change, perhaps.

As has been mentioned, there are plenty of intra-Florida routes. I have been on two now nonexistant intra-Florida routes: TPA-MCO and SRQ-MCO.

I've also done IAH-ELP in Texas.

After booking an itinerary with ORF-IAD I thought of this topic. Which adds my home state of Virginia to my list (California, Alaska, Kansas).

Number of Intra-State Flights?

Does anyone know where I can find statistics on the number of intrastate flights for a state?

I flew WDG-PNC (Enid, OK to Ponca City, OK) on Lone Star Airlines (Fairchild Metro III) in July 1998.

It was on the way to DFW, where I connected to an AA flight.

I was stationed at Enid AFB, OK (END) at the time, for pilot training.

We used WDG for instrument approach training, and as a divert base (I landed there once due to minimum fuel.)

The big states for these are probably California and Texas. Alaska, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida are others. Giant hubs probably have some, like Georgia. Hawaii has some due to islands. Washington, Utah, Arizona, Missouri, Illinois probably have a few.

It doesn't seem that Florida has as extensive of an intrastate flight network. A few years ago, I was able to do MCO-RSW. However, these days it's pretty difficult to get an intrastate flight to RSW, which is annoying because MIA is a 2+ hour drive. The last few times I had to rent a car and just drive from central Florida down to Ft Myers/Naples.

I've done SAN-SFO, SAN-SJC and SAN-LAX and am set to do SAN-SMF soon. There are definitely some more (especially if I connect through LAX or SFO) but I haven't had the need to do those yet.

I flew DAY-CLE many times back when CLE was a Continental (and, briefly, United) hub. Flew the short DAY-CVG hop once. That's not actually an intrastate flight though, as Cincinnati's airport is across the river in Kentucky.

A few years ago, my suitcase landed at CMH. I took a VDB and flew to DAY the next day. United flew my bag CMH-DAY, but lacking a direct flight, it flew via ORD. :)

This seems like a fun question, so I put together the stats for you. All data is from DIIO MI. First of all, there are 16 states with no intrastate flights: AL, AR, CT, DE, ID, IN, KY, LA, ME, NH, NJ, OK, RI, SC, VT, WI. In the screenshot of the table below you can see the states that have, had, or will have intrastate flights at any point during the year 2019, along with the total number of flights and unique O&Ds. For the last column, for example, DFW-AUS and AUS-DFW are counted as 2 O&Ds, so divide that number by 2 to get the number of unique city pairs (assuming, of course, that there aren't triangle routes or other things involved, which isn't necessarily a good assumption). Hope this helps!
