LCY is in the London borough of Newham and LHR is in the London Borough of Hillingdon. Both are part of Greater London. afaics, technically only the "square mile" is in the City of London - but they're all in the city of London.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I always associate LCY with being in the city because you can hop commuter flights out there. Virgin Express used to fly from there

Taipei has two airports serving Taipei Metro Area.

TPE - Chiang Kai Shek Airport (about 35 to 45 mins drive away)
TAY - Sung Shan Airport (within the city)

Like Rejuvenated said, SFO is deep inside San Mateo County. Some maps (like Mapquest) indicate it's an island of San Franciso County, but from San Mateo County's official website, that land does belong to San Mateo County.

As for city limit, it's an unincorporated part of San Mateo County. So, it's NOT in South San Francisco, San Bruno or Milbrae.

So, I believe the answer is that it's an unincorporated piece of land in San Mateo County that's owned by the City of San Francisco.

Very well put - LCY is actually a good 7 miles away from the City. Admittedly with the new DLR connections to Bank and Canary Wharf, it seems a lot less.

SFO is in San Francisco County. If you look at the county maps you will see that the county line swings around the airport. There is also a "SF County" line marker in the airport between the car rental pick up area and the entrance to 101.

The law enforcement jurisdiction of SFO is San Francisco.

I guess you could substitute the Bay Area for San Francisco, and it would be understandable.

I routinely fly into SJC and out of SFO in the same day. The drive is about 45 minutes. OAK is the prefered airport of many in the Bay Area, and increasingly many are chosing to fly from SJC rather than SFO. San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco are however considered a combined Major Metro Area.

Using your logic SFO is not a San Francisco airport. DCA and IAD are not DC airports, while DCA technically is given a DC address it is in Arlington Virginia. EWR is not a New York airport as it is in NJ. CVG is not a Cinncinatti airport because it is in Kentuky. NRT is not a Tokyo airport because it is well outside of Tokyo.....and the only London airport would be LCY as the other airports are not in the City of London, they are in Boroughs of London.

I am also a SF Bay Area native, and I think the sematics about what constitutes an airport within city limits is a bit too constricting. Generally, airports have to be located quite aways from city centers for reasons of noise, pollution, etc.

SFO in any case is administered by the city and county of San Francisco and has its own zip code.

If you live in the greater SF Bay Area, generally speaking, a traveller will have 3 airport options - SFO, OAK, SJC - period. Just as someone in the Washington DC area has 3 airports to choose - DCA, IAD, BWI, and in the NYC area will fly out of JFK, LGA, and EWR.
