Luggage Theft

Luggage theft, how often does it happen? I'm going home over christmas and will probably have some semi-expensive christmas presents in my checked luggage. Should I be concerned?

I've only had something taken once in all the years, that was in August from Air France at Kennedy.

If you can carry them on or ship them it may be better.

In most cases, lock your luggage and you should be fine. If you are really concerned, ask for luggage insurance when you check in.

Thanks for the advice. I use a backpack, so locking it is unfortunately not an option. I will try to stuff everything into my carry-on if possible.

Don't worry, the TSA will cut off your locks, and you may notice a few things missing. It's all good.

Definitely my experience... I only take what can be packed in my carry-on. Try to rearrange what you can... or go for the bigger carry-on bag.

There are two types of luggage: carry-on and lost (or stolen).

Ship your gifts beforehand. Safer and more reliable.

Looks like the original poster may be coming into the U.S. from Japan. Locked luggage shouldn't be a problem then, should it? Unless of course (s)he isn't terminating at the point of entry ...

Actually, the original poster is coming into the EU from Japan. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

Anyway, I will stuff all valuables in my carry-on and only check in dirty laundry. Real dirty...that'll teach 'em to leave my luggage alone. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif
