Transpac Next Week -- Heed Terror Warning?

Hey Gang

I have a transpac coming up next week (Monday) on United; should I or other passengers worry about the new terror threats of suicide hijackings? I noticed whilst looking at some seatmaps on other transpacs that the load has lightened a bit on a number of flights since this announcment was made. Am I right to be a little unnerved or am I overreacting?

Is it just me or do people watch when certain individulas get up and goto the bathroom?

Jim Phillips Jul 31, 2003 4:09 pm

Hey, I think you already answered your own question:

I am bringing my digital camera on the flight so any ******* tries everything, I can personally help beat the living sh!t out of him and take a picture with his mangled @ss with me in it.

Now what I don't quite get is that bit about you being where in whose mangled @ss?

No.

Overreacting.

Probably not just you, but I don't. I don't want to watch people going to the bathroom. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Not sure how relevant this is to the UA forum. Perhaps the TravelBuzz forum might yield more feedback to your question?

F*** the terror warning.

Don't stop your life.

Do what makes you happy.

Don't ever be afraid to die.

Spiff Jul 31, 2003 5:09 pm

You have a greater chance of winning Powerball while being struck by lightning than you do being killed in an airline hijacking.

It's not quite that unlikely, but if you stay home and drive someplace, you're more likely to get killed.

much more likely if driving on transpac flight routes >splash<

fly safe and smart, everyone.

FWIW, I suspect screening at SFO isn't the major protection vs. transpac threat, since pax not asleep on the west bound leg (except for Oz bound) and as much as we query TSA, does one trust every last one of the East Asian screens more? just recall the aborted plan last time

Based on their track history of all the other terror warnings issued, I'd say no. There are times I feel they are just tossing random things out there so when something happens (and I do believe it's a when, not an if) they can this time say I told you so, instead of we ignored it all and didn't stop it.

By and by they came to the beautiful palace in which lived the wise King, and upon being brought before him, they all shouted at once; "Good and wise King, we have come to warn you that the sky is falling!"
"How do you know the sky is falling?" asked the King. "Because a piece of it fell on my head," said Chicken Little.
"Come nearer, Chicken Little," said the King and leaning from his velvet throne, he picked the pebble from the feathers of Chicken Little's head.
"You see it was only a little pebble and not part of the sky at all," said the King. "Go home in peace and do not fear because the sky cannot fall; only rain falls from the sky."

And if enough chicken littles are scheduled to fly next to your E- seat at 54F, you may get the whole row to yourself. Just stand behind a prison matron if anyone starts acting up.

Americans are the most paranoid travellers on earth of course, so I have little doubt loads are and will be down.

I was in Turkey 2 weeks ago and tourism is down horrendously as nearly all US tourists cancelled for summer.

Why? Because Turkey is an "Arabic" country. I kid you not. Durrhhh.

You are statistically FAR more likely to be killed in an auto accident to or from any USA airport, anytime, than on or in a plane. But that will not stop the loads shrinking.

And yes .. why is this thread is the UA forum? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

And based on the flakey and dangerously wrong messages Washington seems keen on spouting out on all sorts of things lately, who really takes much notice of anything their "intelligence" gathers?

Concerned or over-reacting? Over-reacting!

Good grief - there have been a zillion times we've gone to code Orange, threats, etc. I don't want to be blase & say nothing like this can every happen again or the passengers will kill the terrorists on the plane (assuming said terrorists don't have an AK), but odds are you're safer than driving.

There are a zillion flights a day in multiple countries etc - how do you worry/figure out which one is targeted?

PS - I'm mixed on flight figures. On the one hand I want flights to be booked; on the other I'd like them not to be so we get better deals. PS - this "warning" just came out - not that soon to account for reduced loads.

Totally over-reacting if you change your plans. Having lived with terrorism in the UK for most of my life, unless there is an explicit warning targetting a specific plane on a specific date, I change nothing.

Enjoy your trans-pac trip!

People who alter their flight patterns every time CNN spazzes out about a terrorism warning are the same people who buy and sell stocks solely based on those pre-market news announcements. ("Jobless claims up 0.1% this week?" Time to stuff all my money in a mattress.)

The only change Americans should make these days is...watch less TV.

beofotch Aug 1, 2003 8:35 am

Well maybe most Americans are right considering those two bombs went off yesterday in Turkey...

Personally I would love to goto Turkey or any other Arab Country and would have no problem going now.

Two bombs went off in Turkey? Big whoop.

Look at the number of homicides, car accidents, rapes, and other violent, often deadly crimes that have happened in the Atlanta area alone since yesterday! You're safer going to Turkey than you are staying home and doing anything besides hiding under the bed! (mind the dust mites)

Which explains why I was able to get upgraded on Qantas so easily at the last minute!

No cancellations from me...

While I don't doubt for one second that many of my geographically challenged countrymen have no idea that Turkey is part of Europe, I strongly doubt that American tourism in Turkey is down because of a perception that the country is Arabic. Instead, I suspect it has more to do with the fact that Turkey is too close to Iraq for the comfort of many and that Turkey was not viewed very favorably in this part of the world for inhibiting the US military's efforts to establish a northern front in the war. For what it's worth, the stance of the Turkish government appears to have spurred tourism from the Arabic world even as it has caused American's to re-think their plans to visit the country.

I say to the hijackers "Bring it on!" You are not going to disrupt my travel plans. If you try to hijack my flight you are gonna wish you could commit suicide cuz I think a few people are going to beat you to within an inch of your life.

Turkey is NOT an Arabic country ... that was actually my point, that I guess you just helped me make. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

I was in Istanbul for several days and did not see a single word of Arabic written nor did I hear it spoken, anywhere.

Has not stopped the American tourists cancelling though.

The actual population of Istanbul is about 20 million, no matter what the official figures might say. It is the largest city in Europe by miles.

More folks get killed there each day from getting hit on the head from falling meteors than anything related to terrorism I suspect. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

Spiff!!! Now no one would ever come to visit this southern belle in Atlanta! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

Frankly, I feel safer in most European cities at night than in my own hometown, sad, but true.

The terror for me to visit S.E. Asia now is the humidity and the unbearable, immense heat, not the hijackers.

RKG Aug 3, 2003 11:45 am

I am traveling transpac in early September. I would not think of canceling due to a "terror warning".
