It isn't what you are thinking of, but the Act of Union between Scotland and England in 1707 seems to fit the description. (There was a hint of duress in causing the Scots to pass the act, but the Scottish parliament definitely voted to annexe its territory to England, adopting its flag, currency, parliament, etc. Thus it ceded its territory to another nation and dissolved itself.)

Also, the Netherlands has temporarily ceded the land of Camp Zeist (in Holland) to Scotland for the trial of the suspects in the bombing of flight Pan Am 103. The land is considered soverign Scottish soil under its jurisdiction, (the Libyians would not agree to the defendants actually being tried within the United Kingdom itself).

AC*SE:
This is probably not what you had in mind, but I believe NL officially ceded Camp Zeist to the UK for the PanAm trial.
Still trying to figure out the one you're thinking of... (and I always fancied myself a history/geography buff!).

Wow Yonatan, I edited my post above at the same moment you posted yours! Great minds, etc. (I can't think of it either) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

(Although Camp Zeist has been ceded to Scotland and not the UK. One of the provisions of the Act of Union was that Scotland retained its own legal system. Therefore, to this day, Scotland and England have completely different legal systems and laws. The Scottish courts seem comfortably more equitable).

I'd like to think so, but it's more likely a matter of said minds situated in European time zones taking their "morning run" on the BB http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif. (or were you the one looking over my shoulder at the computer lab???)
Maybe AC*SE will give us a little hint (e.g. continent)? This doesn't have anything to do with West Berlin by any chance?

ozstamps Aug 8, 2000 6:42 am

Just for my own info, when was the District Of Columbia set up?

ozstamps Aug 8, 2000 6:45 am

I was in Antarctica for NYE this year.

Some would be amazed at what is happening down there re abandoning bases and claims etc, as the new treaty bans mineral removal or commercial exploration.

GK Aug 8, 2000 6:46 am

I assume that AC*SE is excluding the return of Kowloon/New Territories/Hong Kong and Macau under grounds of 'decolonialisation'. East Timor is too passionate an argument for me to enter right now, that leaves the sale of Alaska perhaps? No far too large a territory and my US/Russian History isn't that clear. Must be referring to a very small island or rock outcrop somewhere.. used for nuclear testing perhaps ?

Ummm, could it have been Hawaii? Pearl Harbor was ceded to the USA. And later Hawaii annexed itself to the USA.

I scored only 56 on the www.travelerscenturyclub.org/countries.htm listing - maybe I should take the car over across the Channel this weekend and drive in loops for a bit on the motorways to up my score.

But I do have to ask what would I get for my $100 joining fee + $65 annual fee ? (other than the right to wear a $10 button with pride?). Don't think this is an organisation designed for my needs.

On a more serious note, does anyone know any good travel adventure lecturing type organisations in London - I fancy a few evenings with wine looking at adventure travel photos !

Cheerio & all in the best possible humour of course.

During the Second World War, the Royal Family of the Netherlands was in exile in Canada. Princess Juliana was pregnant, but by Dutch law her child had to be born in the Netherlands to qualify for citizenship. Therefore, the Canadian government voluntarily ceded the hospital room she was in to the Netherlands, which is where Princess Margriet was born.

Hong Kong/Kowloon/The New Territories doesn't count, as parts were only under a 99-year lease, and the rest clearly falls under the heading of decolonialism. Macau is also thereby excluded.

AC*SE Aug 8, 2000 11:56 am

To be honest, I had neglected Camp Zeist, but there is no question that it is a true cession, since the Courts of Scotland are exercising jurisdiction there.

However, the case I am thinking of took place on 19 January 1943, and involved a room. One country is in North America, and the other is in Europe.

So Islandclub was spot on (above). Superb.

AC*SE Aug 8, 2000 12:47 pm

Trust islandcub (it's all the product of fine Maritime education, you know!)

islandcub Aug 8, 2000 1:12 pm

It is? But, but, I dropped out of the university we both went to, and I was awful at History!

On the other hand, I spend way too much time in Ottawa, where one can scarcely avoid the annual tulip festival...

AC*SE Aug 8, 2000 1:55 pm

Well, just goes to show that even a partial university education in the maritimes goes a long way!
