Operational upgrade

I could not figure out just which forum would cover my question so I hope you will excuse me if this is not the correct one. I have been an Elite member of Northwest Airlines for some years but did not qualify this year. I have enjoyed the upgrades I have been able to get as a result of being an Elite member. Someone used the term Operational upgrade and I would like to know just what that means. I will be traveling to Asia and any chance of an upgrade would be teriffic.
Thanks

A simple search of 'operation upgrade' in a few forums will lead you to a number of discussions pertaining to the topic.

An operational upgrade is when a customer gets upgraded from a lower class of service to a higher class because the lower class has more confirmed passengers than it does available seats.

... and is rather unlikely to happen to non-elites on NW transpac flights, unfortunately.

The last time it hapend to us it was short for "The air Marshal wants your cushy exit row seat, so would you mind flying in business"?

No sir, not a problem at all.
