Just returned from Elko meeting up with friends from Northern California to see the eclipse. We set up at the Townplace Suites which has a dirt field south of the parking lot in a perfect position for viewing. Although there were clouds throughout the morning it cleared just in time for the totality. We each had 8" Celetron SC scopes with camera adapters (their's was digital and mine was film). We also had spotting scopes and binoculars all fitted with white light solar filters from Thousand Oaks. The best part of the event was sharing the viewing with the many families there as their kids were wowed by the view especially the 35mm Televue Panoptic with the 8" Celestron; full frame fun!

On of the takaways from the event was the pre panic from those in the immediate area about the cloud cover and the temptaion to pull up camp and drive 30 minutes away to Carlin, NV where the forecast called for less cloud cover (it was socked in 1 hour before totality. I cited Murphy's Law as it related to: The other line always moves faster. Then I explained the many times I jumped the que at an airport in an attempt to get a faster line; immigration, security, checkin etc...only to find the new line just stalled and people from my previous line seemed to move faster. I advised to hold position. Others followed and we were rewarded with clear skies at the moment where it counted.

Cheers,

Seems you had a really good time. I am my wife got out around 8:30AM to see where we could go with less cloud cover and within 15 min it cleared.
Like you, the best part was to stop by and sharing the event and fun with a couple of ladies who set up their tripods and lenses at CVS parking lot.
Drove to Lamoille Canyon after for a hike but most of the trail is now covered with snow...

P.S. It was surprisingly few people in Elko, compared to the madness (and fun) I witnessed at Madras in 2017... And seems another madness will be in Waco next year.

I was in an undisclosed location in NV. No one around so it was great. Clouds at first which was neat because it was visible without glasses. Quick glance only. Half way through it cleared. Great view of the ring. Shadows right before and after we’re very neat. Drive home along part of the Pony Express Trail and old Lincoln Highway. Stocked up on adult beverages before heading east.

Here is a photo taken by my friends from Novato, CA in Elko using a vortex razor birding scope with an adapter for an iPhone.

I'll post my pics after the film gets developed when I return from Tasmania in a couple of weeks.

Great pics! I was at the end of the paved portion of the Scenic Drive in Capitol Reef NP. We got there just after 6:00 to beat the crowd, and that parking lot didn't even fill up - I'm thinking everyone else set up at the visitor center or along highway 24.

I'll get mine posted tomorrow.

This looks stunning! I remember the Korean Drama Scarlet Heart Ryeo, the first few episodes will look like that when the character enters to the new dimension which is from the past. It's just so stunning.

Well, sort of ....

1 for 2 on camera rolls. The 29 year old Canon with new 300 lens took decent pictures, but sun is small as to be expected. The Ancient Pentax attached to the 28 year old Celestron C8 was blank, likely caused by the winder not having a good bite on the film (haven't used the thing in over 15 years).
