The DC-8 looked really nice with the upgraded CFM engines. It had an impressive service life and outlasted the 707 in passenger and cargo ops.

Maybe all the purple you see is just Grimace changing clothes in the gate area?

I loved seeing these at MCI well into the 2000's. Cool-looking aircraft.

There was an accident at MCI in the mid-90's involving a cargo DC-8, killing the crew. Only time in my life I can recall local news about a large aircraft crashing at or near MCI.

Its not just about ability to operate non-stop to Asia. It's about connection opportunities. By using ANC as a hub, being roughly enroute to most of South East Asia from most of the US, they can have 10 flights from around the US fly to ANC, sort the packages and then have 10 flights to 10 Asian cities. Thus creating a lot of efficient one-stop routing from the US to Asia, where the alternative would be 2-stops most likely, to the US-hub and then to the Asia destination and then to the onward city. E.g. DEN to SIN package can route one-stop via ANC Vs DEN-MEM-HKG-SIN or something like that.
