44.

45 if you count both Pretoria and Cape Town as capitals of South Africa.

48 if you count Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff.

Of the countries I've been to, I've only been to slightly more than half of their capitals. What does that say?

For example, I have been to...
Canada, not Ottawa
Sweden, not Stockholm

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands but not the seat of national government. It’s a particular example where the constitution names a capital city but in practical terms the seat of government is elsewhere, in this case The Hague.

I have been to at least 30 cities with US embassies, and to plenty of embassies in the US. So make that at least 31.

69, defined as staying at least one night (short connection in an airport hotel doesn't count).

I also like to count countries I have been to but not been to the capital:

Portugal (Porto)
Cambodia (Siem Reap)
Switzerland (Geneva, Zurich, Basel)
Tanzania (Zanzibar)
Myanmar (Yangon)
Turkey (Many but not Ankara)
New Zealand (Auckland)
Australia (Sydney)
