They do check the boarding pass with the passport at boarding for international flights, at least here in Asian airports.

Agree. With hand baggage only it can be the first point a passport is checked. Security require boarding pass only.

Always have has passport checked on border in international flights everywhere.

I've never not had my ID/passport checked internationally, except for Schengen-internal flights.

I've never had my ID checked at security, except in the US.

ID is checked regularly for domestic flights in Canada.

Can refundable as tickets be refunded past check-in?

On domestic flights, yes. On international terminal flights (where you have freedom to purchase duty free at point of sale) it gets a bit trickier as you have to get an airline employee to let you into customs area after the flight is refunded. An In person refund raises more questions than phone call or online app refund.

Only in airports that have a one-way "after customs/exit immigration" area.

Unlikely to be an issue if you're flying from places in Schengen, or from the US, etc.
