I often ask my middle and window seatmates which bags are theirs, and offer to retrieve them.

I don't move so fast sometimes. When I am in domestic FC on United, I get up to let the other passenger out and get my bag out of the overhead bin if I am on the aisle. Once the window seat passenger is out and on his way, I sit back down and put my headphones and other items into my bag. Once there is a gap in the people coming by, I get off the plane. IMHO, it is easy enough to look around and double-check to avoid holding people up. In coach, I do similar. Since I prefer the aisle, I let the others out if they want out, and then I get my stuff together and go.

cut in front of me and you're liable to run into an elbow

If there was ever a time for an accidental elbow to the face this is it.

An aircraft is never a good place to commit assault and battery, but if you want to avoid federal jurisdiction over your prosecution, wait until the plane's cabin doors are open.

If in the aisle, I will get up to pull my bag down. But unless I'm in the first few rows, I'll sit back down. I find it very awkward to stand in the aisle for several minutes, contorting my head/neck around an overhead bin door or other people's bags that they might want to also pull down. Once people in the row or two in front start to deplane, it's an adequate indication for me to be ready to get back up.

When I get off a plane, as I am usually in an aisle seat and am pretty quick, When the "fasten seatbelts" sign goes off, I usually get up from my seat and walk forward as many rows as I can before the aisle gets crowded. I have no problem if others do that in front of me. I figure that the quick and agile people can get off first, and then people who prefer to take their time slowly get out of their seats and do whatever they want.
Recently, people who do not look like frequent flyers in coach have stood up when the fasten seatbelt sign goes off. Instead of moving forward, though, they just stand their at their row, even though the aisle is free for quite a ways towards the exit. They keep standing there until passengers in rows in front of them have stood up, gotten their bags and moved forward. I can see that those non-frequent flyers don't want to be seen as cutting in line, but they're holding everyone up behind them. So which is proper plane etiquette when getting off: 1. Stand up and zip forward if you can (if people in rows ahead of you are still seated), or 2. Stand up and stand there until every single person in front of you has gotten up, gotten bags and moved towards the exit? To be clear, I am NOT saying that it's OK to cut in front of people who are standing in front of you. EDITED TO ADD: The question is, "during the few seconds before anyone else has stood up, is it OK to move forward a few rows"? I have never gotten a bad reaction, and I see people (usually frequent flyers) do it during the workweek all the time. Thanks. |

Sit down and wait until the row in front of yours is moving. Anything else is rude. Your current behavior " I usually get up from my seat and walk forward as many rows as I can" is rude. Very rude. You would be blocked is 3 nanoseconds if you were behind me....

I went from row 30 aisle all the way to domestic F cabin today without bumping into anyone. I had a tight connection already in boarding phase, but if anyone was going to block me, on purpose or inadvertent, I would have calmly explained.
Since it was a redeye, everyone was probably still feeling like zombies. I had no carryons nor checked luggage. |
