Qantas has just added a fifth engine to the plane, to ferry it to where it was needed. Fascinating picture and read

Since the OMNI's are, in general, for topics other than miles, points or travel, we'll move this thread to TravelBuzz.

Thanks.

So, instead of inconveniencing the stranded passengers in JNB too much longer, we'll inconvenience those flying from SYD a little by adding a fuel stop in PER. OK.

the capability has been around for a long time

one of the first Boeing Flight Test missions that I worked as an analysis engineer (~Feb 1979) was on the Lufthansa 747-200 with the ferry kit for the GE CF6-50

c'mon ... in AOG (Airplane On Ground) situations the airline's first priority is to get the jet back into revenue-capable (airworthy) status as quickly as possible

I'm not disputing that, just having a go at the wording/spin QF case in the article!

I have a feeling most of the pax on board were quite okay with it, in fact I'd even go so far as to say most thought of it as a very cool life experience that they'll be able to share with family and friends for a long time. Pretty awesome and knowing Australian culture I highly doubt anyone had a serious issue with it.

And if enough PAX had issues, they might have offloaded themselves, and the stop in PER might have not been required anymore..

You'd need a lot of passengers to offload themselves to make up for 6 tonnes + drag
