How's the 787 like?
How's the 787 like, particularly in economy class? Ok, I know there's differences between airlines but what are others' experiences in general?
Is there a noticeable difference in cabin humidity? Did it make it a more restful trip? How are the electronic equivalent of window shades? Any other differences? Ok, I'll write this and be laughed at.....Since the Concorde is no longer in operation, sometimes I ride on a CRJ700 and pretend it's a Concorde. Both have 2+2 seating. :p |
My only experience was a month ago on the brand new United 787-9. I flew from LAX to IAH, so a pretty short flight for that aircraft. Short enough that I didn't notice any difference in cabin altitude or humidity. The best part of the aircraft in my opinion are the windows. They are massive. I had read plenty about the airplane over the years and knew the windows were larger. Until you sit next to them you can't really appreciate how much larger they really are. I was also nervous about the electronic tint. I knew they didn't go fully opaque. I would think this would be an issue when trying to create "night time" on board. However the crew set all shades to the darkest setting and the plane was fully dark. You could still see outside though which is nice.
I did have a TATL flight on a 787-8 this December, but sadly it was swapped to a 767-300. Really bummed about that. |
I've flown it a few times - with JL, NH and UA - thus far just in Y. All flights were TPAC, save for an emergency landing (DEN-not NRT-SEA).
The air didn't turn me into a prune quite as it normally might on other aircraft, and the control panel for the windows kept me occupied for all in five minutes. Other than that, the flights are still long... |

My only experience is on QR. I thought it was very nice

I have only been in J so can't address your question re Y. In J, even the long flight to/from NRT was quite nice and restful.

I sat in business class on Kenya Airline, middle row, CDG-NBO-CDG.
Massive windows! I did not feel any difference in air quality but that usually does not bother me. One thing I noticed is that while landing all the windows fogged up. Another thing, nice and quiet take off! |
Ba 787 - wt+
Flew a BA 787 YYZ-LHR on my way back from the Chicago Marathon a couple of weeks ago. Actually got an OpUp from economy.
Economy is 3-3-3 so similar to the 777. WT+ is 2-3-2. Not sure I noticed the different humidity/altitude. It was a comfortable plane but I was still pretty sore from my little run the day before. Also noted lots of bin space. One thing that stood out was it seemed like the a/c was pretty beat up already. Tape keeping cabinets closed and some broken stuff in one of the lavatories. |

I've flown the 787-8 with UA, NH & AM and the 787-9 on UA. I've done both Y (UA -8, NH, AM) & C/J (UA -8, UA -9). I will likely continue to choose the 787 when it is available over other aircraft for the better cabin air pressure/humidity experience, even though the seats are generally narrower than on other types (save for the 3-4-3 777s). |
I'm told that in Y it's very cramped. And don't start thinking that flying on a 787 is like going to a spa, either. There are a few on the BA board that will avoid that aircraft type at all costs.

I flew UA 787-8 in Y r/t IAH-LHR a few months ago and found the flight to be very comfortable. I too enjoy the huge windows and it is definitely a quiet plane, from take-off to cruise speed very muted jet noise. The lavs have auto flush and auto faucets which are nice as well. Tons of bin space and the great led lighting are added bonus IMHO. I did notice I wasnt quite as dried out or stuffy headed and had less problems with my ears popping, always a good thing in my book.

The first time I flew a 787 last year I had a cold. I'm mildly asthmatic too so when you have a cold, just being able to breath without laboring is a blessing. Getting onto an airplane with the lack of humidity and higher altitude pressurization is probably one of the worst things you can do in such health(I had to go on a business trip). I ended up flying on the 787 and I actually felt fine on board. I remember talking to the crew about how great I felt.

In coach on JL, it was a 31"x17.5" seat. Nothing whatsoever restful about it. We got those seats as last-minute BA awards, so I can't complain a whole lot, but there was nothing about it that makes me want to do it again.
It was a 2-side configuration...I remember that. We were in the 3rd-to-last row on the plane, so I don't recall if we only got a 2-side because of the narrowing of the fuselage or if it was that way throughout the cabin. It was a DEL-NRT redeye that they operated with a 777 on most days...just happened to be a 787 on our day. I didn't notice anything different about the humidity or pressurization, perhaps because the seat was so small it was hard to focus on anything else. |
Only did UA 787 IAH-ORD in J, so can't really comment on humidity or economy, but can say that I was disappointed that the windows didn't get as dark as I had expected. It was still fairly light in the cabin with all the windows darkened. I would definitely suggest an eye mask if planning on sleeping. Not an issue when it's not bright out, of course.

Just flew on a United 787-8 between NRT and LAX in economy class. It was my first 787 flight, and by the time we got to LAX I noticed that my eyes weren't as dry as they normally get on long flights. So I think the higher humidity is a plus.
The other big thing I noticed was the fact that it was very quiet compared to other aircraft like the 747 and 777. |
