window vs aisle seat preference?
(I hope this is the correct forum..)
For daytime flights, I usually opt for an aisle, since I have long legs and it offers a chance to stretch out into the aisle from time to time. For red-eyes, I choose window, so that I have something to lean on, and so that others do not awaken me by climbing over me to get to the bathroom. Is this the approach of experienced flyers on this site? If not, care to share your rationale? |

Aisle for the same reasons you stated: Tall / long legs. So much more comfortable.
However, on the rare occasions I'm fortunate enough to fly in J / F then it doesn't matter cuz it's all pretty comfortable! In those situations I prefer the window, because as said above, less inconvenience, nicer scenery, and you can look for UFOs ;) |
Always the aisle. I'm mildly claustrophobic. It wasn't always a problem, but it has become a problem as seat pitch has shrunk.
I have never been able to lean against the window to sleep. Even with ear plugs and pillows, the noise seems to vibrate right through to my bones. |
For flights under say 4 hours I prefer a window seat because I enjoy looking at the scenery below. For long haul flights I'd prefer the aisle so I can get up and stretch.

Aisle seems to be the consensus.
That was always my thinking as well, until recently. On long overnight flights (eg N America to Europe), I figure the lesser of two evils is to be the gazelle hopping over others at 3 AM than having two other gazelles with irritable bladders hopping over me every hour or so. And practically speaking, if one tries to sleep, one can't hang their legs into the aisle anyway or risk getting trampled or run over....so I am not sure the "extra room" rationale fits. For this reason I am thinking of going with the window on JFK-PRG this summer. |
usually aisle. I love looking at the window, but I sacrifice that for the practicality of comfort and being able to get up and down easily, I'm not usually bothered if someone needs to climb over me.
|
I'm always a window seat. I love looking out the window and don't have to worry about people climbing over me or the cart in the aisle. For flights less than 4 hours, I almost never need to get up. For the few long-haul flights I've been on, I've get up maybe twice during the flight. If I needed to get up more often, I'd reconsider my seat choice.

If I can get a seat with more legroom, I'll often take a window seat because I enjoy the view out the window, especially if flying into a new airport/city that I've never flown into before. On routes or into cities that I've flown into several times and don't intend on seeing anything "new", I usually take an aisle for the legspace and comfort and knowing I can get up without disturbing anyone.
If flying with Mrs. FDJ87, I usually give her the window and let her enjoy the view out of the window since I've flown way more than she has, and I take the aisle/middle. |

Any short flights (<5hrs) are always window seats so that you can look out the window. Anything longer I tend to opt for the aisle seat so that I can get up without disturbing anyone - unfortunately if you're a 3 configuration, you get disturbed by someone with a bladder the size of a pea. Been lucky on my more recent long haul flights, all to China, that I've been on the aisle and disturbed rarely. Plus, in the aisle seat you get the obvious extra leg room when the lights go out - or find a spare 3 seats in rows 50-60 and have a lay down!

For me, it depends more on the type of airplane and the length of the flight. For cross-country flights, I try to get window in an exit row with my status. I like looking out the window. If it's a shorter flight and a smaller plane, I prefer aisle.
For a red eye, I don't care. As long as it's not a middle seat :) |
