+1 - I have a friends that says it is cray to fly SAV-DCA, just drive it. Well it takes me 45 mintues to get to SAV, <1 hour wait & a 1 1/2 hour flight then 2stops on the metro to our hotel. Last week from home to hotel was 4 hours, if I drove it would be between 8 - 10 hours on I-95. Not bad considering I usually find non-stop flights for < $225.

I don't hardly ever drive due to vision problems (judging distances can be very difficult at times) but as others have said it "depends." While I don't have to travel for work I typically take 10 days off each summer to visit friends in PHX and can fly out of my podunk hometown airport and be there in under 10 hours (which includes an irritating 3-4 layover at ORD) or drive it in 2-3 days each way. Honestly I'd rather have the extra couple days to enjoy with the people I'm visiting. Now if I had the time and opportunity to take a couple days and take a trip up the PCH I'd be all over that.

They all have a limit.
- Trains are the best. (I did take a 20+ hour train ride and I hope I won't have to do it again. Too much.)
- Driving is ok in short distances. Anything beyond 3 hours is uncomfortable for me. I do it if I have to (or if it saves ME a decent amount of money).
- Flying is ok, but can be a PITA, due to all the protocols, risks related to weather, etc.

Paris-Amsterdam - clearly train.
Chicago-New York - definitely fly.
New York-Boston - drive.

Flying!

From Vegas to Sedona, flew to Phoenix and then connected to Flagstaff. Drive from Flagstaff to Sedona was one hour less than from Phoenix to Sedona.

1. Drive Las Vegas to Sedona 5 hours

2. Fly Las Vegas to Phoenix then drive to Sedona 3 hours+

3. Fly Las Vegas - Phoenix - Flagstaff then drive Sedona 8 hours+ with waiting time for connection

Making choice 3 was easy based on my desire to avoid driving. :)

It depends. If I'm going somewhere solo, flying all day. However, there's so much fun that can be had in road trips with the right people. Laughing, singing to music you all like, relaxing, stopping at restaurants and maybe seeing cities you'd never see otherwise.

Last week I flew to Lansing, Michigan and helped my brother and his wife drive a car to Maryland. We spent the night in Pittsburgh, a city I hadn't been to in 13 years, and then had lunch and walked around the next day in Morgantown, WV, a city I'd never been to. I doubt I'd have seen Morgantown otherwise and ended up having a great time in Pittsburgh.
