I prefer to fly. Saying that, I can't actually drive :)
Having worked in the rail industry both in the UK and abroad, I have developed a keen interest in trains (an occupational hazard, some might say) and tend to travel by train whenever possible - with the exception of within the UK. I spend far too many hours of my life on TransPennine "Express" services... National Express coaches are preferable. |
Dont like driving long distance. I do like drive everywhere in Central London and do so every day.
I happily paid to fly LCY-MAN pick-up a rental car and drive to in-laws in North Wales in the days of VLM. Since they cancelled the service, I am not willing to trek to LHR so now do the train and pick-up the rental car. Flights are not that expensive. |
I love driving, especially long distances. A second vote for comfortable German cars from me ;)
It depends exactly how tight the journey is as to whether I'll fly or drive. Generally if it costs about the same and it doesn't matter if I go straight to work from the ferry that day on a 36 hour day I'll drive. If it does matter or it's too much hassle, I'll get a flight at least halfway and drive the rest if I can't get all the way to the final destination for a decent amount of cash. Pre-seeing the light with BA, I used to very rarely fly and drove everywhere. Easyjet and Ryanair put me off flying - which is saying a lot when you really do love the whole process. Flying with BA has brought back the "joy" (corny word, mostly truthful) of flying and it actually gives me something back too in Avios and RFS opportunities, so that's what I default to now. |
It depends a lot on the purpose of traveling! If the aim is simply to get to a destination then for me, I definitely prefer flying over driving (as either driver or passenger) although if there's no sensibly timed flight and the distance is short enough that will motivate me to drive. On the other hand, if the aim is to experience the journey/see what's outside on the way then flying obviously isn't an option and driving is still far superior to the train as you can stop off along the way, explore interesting diversions, etc.
When flying isn't an option, driving vs taking the train is a debate I have had with myself rather too much. If driving is likely to be quicker, then unless it's a long journey (say >5 hrs) I'll almost always drive - same goes vs. tube or walking. I certainly wouldn't go so far as to say I enjoy driving - especially in Central London where I find the amount of time I spend stopped at traffic lights waiting while noone goes the other way irritates me no end - but it's often the "least worst" option unfortunately. Changing trains and having to wait on cold, empty station platforms late at night, cramped commuter train seats, etc. are all rather non-appealing. |
I was quite surprised to see the OPs question because the train is missing as an option. I clearly prefer train travel (especially in first class) over flying over driving.

But it always depends on where you live. Only regional trains depart from my hometown, so I always have to change at least once to get to remote destination. On those regional trains, you don't get reserved seats or any convenience, so that puts me off. Further, I seem to have luck stuck to my shoes (as a german saying goes), and had at least 5 out of 6 train journeys go horribly wrong (Missed connections, cancelled trains...) On my last trip 2 trains have been cancelled, a third one was 90 minutes late and so full that there was hardly room to stand - but I had to go where I was heading, so I could enjoy standing in an ICE for 3 hours straight) - uh uh, I am not putting myself through this anymore. I am rather stuck at some Airport (Lounge!) for 7 hours (as today), than at some cold train station... Having said that, when I lived closer to FRA, taking a train in first class to ZRH was rather nice. Also the Eurostar saved me more than once, when LHR was not able to handle a little snow... |

I genuinely hate driving. So, I prefer flying.
Trains I can deal with, even in India. Security at airports never gets to me now, I barely notice it. So I greatly prefer flying, which in my case is just as well. The prospect of a 2 week fly-drive down the West Coast of the USA would fill me with absolute dread, that's not a holiday! Why drive when someone else can take you there? |

I have to drive each year to the Glastonbury Festival, and I loathe it
And I suppose Waitrose/Tesco don't do delivery to your area either? I think I'd be stressed if I had to drive 58 miles round trip to go to a supermarket. I used to fly to do quite a lot of my grocery shopping (my suitcases used to be filled with loo paper, Waitrose ready meals, Scottish king scallops etc) and I'd much prefer that to driving even 10 miles round trip to a supermarket  |
I love both, but feel that i get enough driving.
I don't 'get enough' flying though.. |

As a passenger I prefer flying.
I like trains but the standard on the commuter trains here in London is a joke In regards to driving, on Omni "Furthest you have driven in one day" some who have done 2000miles in about 24h, madness :) |
I love driving but the fuel economy in my car is a bit of an issue and it's not the most comfortable car to be in for a longer drive. I prefer the train over flying but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy flying :).

I don't drive but suffered travel sickness so much as a child (and still suffer occasionally now) that i'm not a fan of getting in a car more than I have to, ditto learning to drive
I don't fly anywhere near as much as i'd like to, but regularly travel by train especially from Cambridge to London which find far more relaxing than any car journey i've experienced |
Having enjoyed a brief airing in the BA forum, this thread has now been moved over to the TravelBuzz! forum.

Chalk me up as one of those people who will fly BOS-EWR, even though when you include driving to the airport, checkin/security, taking the flight, waiting for bags, and taking the train from the airport to final destination basically takes up as much time as doing the actual 4.5 hour drive.
It's not that I hate driving...but I do get 40 minutes of work done if I fly :D |
