Silly amenity kit question
I've had to cross the pond several times in the past few months and I have been lucky to have been seated in Global First each time. After all of these flights, I am now the proud owner of six Global First amenity kits.
Here's a silly question - what do you all do with them? Do you keep them, give them as gifts, politely decline when offered one after boarding? I'd love to hear suggestions... |
Depending on the airline, I'll save them. For others, I use the kits for the various cords that I bring along on a trip. They definitely help keep a bag organized on an extended trip.
|
Yep if it's an airline/class I'm not sure I'll fly again I'll definitely keep the kit; some of them I've still got wrapped in plastic and unused.
Otherwise I just give them away as gifts or take the useless stuff out of it and use it as an actual travel bathroom pack. |
Silly amenity kit question
They're like Pokemon cards! You gotta collect them all! Lol. JK. I have a whole stash of them also. I end up giving them to friends who would appreciate them, sell them on eBay or give them away on my travel blog. Make sure to keep one of each airline for your personal collection.
|
Some also donate extra amenity kits, hotel toiletries, etc. to various organisations such as homeless shelters or charities serving disadvantaged segments.
Here are some ideas from the FlyerTalk Cares forum: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/flyer...youth-hiv.html http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/flyer...r-travels.html |
I keep mine. You'll find dozens of uses for the bags.
Pencil case Overnight toiletry bag Camera case Foreign currency purse Cords I try and use up all the items too before they get stale. You can use the face/eye lotions on your hands if you already have a designated favorite. Mouthwash is nice to keep at work. Toothbrushes are handy for unexpected overnight guests so you don't have to waste a "new" one. |
Depends what is in them. If there is a hand or skin cream that's a brand I like I keep that product and the other stuff just rolls around in a drawer until I throw them out. Some I give to friends. I also sell some on ebay. Some follks happily pay $20 or more to pretend they received it on a flight!! I have sold other travel items on ebay, like first class luggage tags, priority boarding tags/passes and they just get snapped up. I do like to keep 1 new or unopened bag from each airline.
|
I keep the kit itself but I collect the socks, combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, kleenex & lip balm and then give them to my Temple where they then donate them to homeless shelters
|
I open them up (this goes for all the soaps, shampoos, etc. I get from hotels) and:
- Chapstick goes in my stash. I use it all the time and like having lots in the house - Toothbrushes go in the guest bathroom in case someone forgets one - A few shampoos, soaps, and conditioners do the same thing - Socks go in a bag for the local homeless shelter - as do extra soaps, shampoos, conditioners, toothbrushes. etc once my guest bath is stocked - actual bags also go to homeless shelter (unless I need one as a replacement for a cord bag) - Pens either go in my desk or get left around the world |
SAA amenity cases come with a little pouch that is excellent for computer cords, adapters and other bits and pieces.
|
Lots of them wind up on eBay.
|
My wife's using a couple of the bags for cord/radar detector pouches for the car. She's found that the cords she needs fit pretty well in it.
|
I guess I've never understood the fascination with these things. I usually just leave them on the plane.

I've never used them for that, but may try it out for my next trip. :) |
I'm OCD so I use them to organize my lingerie and socks when I pack. That way if I have to open by bag in transit people don't have to see all my unmentionables.
|
In addition to the many uses already listed in previous posts. I also keep some for family members not teaveling in premium cabins.
|
I wish they gave those on the HI and domestic flights. Some of these flights are longer than the flights to Europe, etc.

I have one that holds my bike tools nicely that I keep in the bottom of my panier.
|
I keep the small bags for my cell phone chargers and ear phones, and other small electronics, when traveling and in my work brief.

I use my E bags from Turkish as swimming goggle bags. I used a United bag for toiletries when I fly. I had an old Delta bag I used to use but lost it. My daughter loves the bags and uses them for jewelry, knick knacks etc.
If I had more I would give more away. |
Give all mine away to friends/family since my +1 keeps hers for memory sake
|
My mom makes it a point to always replenish her stock from my flights :-) - she has different uses for them, but then she also gives them to her friends as gifts....I personally keep a few - I currently have a couple from Lufthansa first class flights, American, United, KLM, Turkish and Delta.
|
I keep them at home, because they're perfect when guests stay overnight. When they're done with, I usually keep the bags for my future travels.

I am resurrecting this old thread because I am facing the same dilemma. But we have dozens and dozens of new and sealed amenity kits, almost 50 toothbrush/dental kits, and more. I have already done everything listed on this thread:
- Sold more interesting kits on Ebay (non-US or US kits in sets) - Use bags for cords (the SN bag is especially useful) - Given them to family members flying long-haul coach (AA) - Use for personal makeup/toiletry bag (CX) - Use as regular "flight bag" with my own amenities that I want for all flights (UA, surprisingly) - Simply dug into them to pull out individual items - Collect special edition kits (current AA vintage sets) - Thrown them out (OS) And STILL we have SO MANY kits! We are about to travel to Myanmar and Cambodia and were wondering if it would be appropriate to just give them out as gifts to kids (especially the dental kits) since we won't give cash ever. Or if there is something else we should do. We are currently expats and we don't know the charities here that might accept them. Any ideas? |

Interesting. Is it worth the hassle to sell them on eBay? I dunno, sounds like more trouble than it is worth.

If you're lucky enough to fly TG, LH, or NH F then the Rimowa amenity kits are definitely worth selling on eBay. You'll get around 100USD/ea for these little things, more if it's a rare color.

I sold several British Airways First bags, designed by Anya Hindmarch, for a tidy little sum on ebay, many years ago.
This was around the time when those Anya Hindmarch canvas tote bags that read "I am Not a Plastic Bag" sold for a small fortune. Never used ebay before that, and never again . . . but that's another story. |
Yes, with our powers combined we have shown (with strong supporting evidence) that the range of prices on eBay for Rimowa first class amenity kits are between $50-$150.
Now, if only there was some other easier simpler way to express that amount on a casual forum post without someone going out of their way to correct you. "around 100"? no, way too obvious, I should have calculated the mean based on recently sold items through March 15th before ever opening my big mouth (it comes out to just over $89, thats for 28 (single) kits sold in the last two weeks). So, thank you sir. Thank you for wasting everyones time, and calling me out on something so mind-numbinlgy minuscule that even Gordon Ramsey would say "Eh, let it slide. It's good enough." PS: The links you posted are for (BR) amenity kits (which always sell for less) for sale as opposed to sold. If you want to see what things have recently been sold for, when you search for something on eBay you can go to the left hand column and under "Show Only" you can select "Completed listings", this will show completed and sold items in green. |

So you weren't trying to correct me huh? Just adding some information? Pure altruism, wow. Nope not adding information. Just trying too hard to be a smarty pants with the wrong info. Perhaps you should use a tad more brain power, I'm sensitive to stupidity. |
