Greeted by name at check-in?
 

Imagine this: You are a P passenger arriving to a designated first
class check-in counter. The agent greets you very friendly by name,
"Hello, Mr. Flyertold, nice to see you."

Do you freak out? Is it a bit too much? Or is it nice and
personal?

Cultural context: Western Europe

It's a nice touch to the overall service, but to me at least it's neither expected nor required.

It wouldn't freak me out.

If they said, "Hi, do you have check-in?" first then... I'd freak out.

If I know that person, then it's fine.

If someone I don't know recognizes me by name, it's a bit creepy.

On a related note, I absolutely hate it when cashiers thank you by name using the name on your credit card or loyalty card. It's completely fake and shallow.

I often had that happen at ROC and PVD when I lived there... I appreciated the thought.

The staff at the old AC at FRA knew me and greeted me by name. If there was some facial recognition software action going on it would freak me out a bit.

BA apparently data mines the Internet and social media sites for this type of information and photos to create a personal gearing and recognition for high value customers. I do not like it.

If it's somewhere I stay regularly, I appreciate the modicum of recognition. I have 80 nights at a local hotel and I think one of the staff recognizes me. They were sold out last week and I reverted back to where I spent 50 nights last fall, but haven't stayed in 8 months, and both agents greeted me by name. I must admit, I appreciated it.

Somewhere new, where the bellman reads my luggage tag and radios the front desk - no, not so much. Why? Dunno. Just seems fake, forced, etc.

Always greeted by name at our local, small-town airport. Doesn't worry me!

I hate my name and don't really want to hear it, anywhere.
I hate my assumed "title" even more...

What is a P passenger?

I'd love for them to greet me by name! Not sure how you can feel uneasy about a greeting that, as you say, is friendly.

Personally I'm against being greeted by name at check in. I'd prefer the other people standing around the check in counter don't know my name. Besides that, I've only ever been greeted by Mr. Last Name, never simply first name. I'm one to prefer being called by first name even in a professional setting, not last name.

The only thing that I find more annoying at check in than using my name is verbally telling me what my room number is. Simply write it on the key card envelope, don't advertise my room number to the entire lobby.

I like the personal touch; however, if they did it before I handed over my identification, I'd be concerned.
