Many of the stories in this thread are great, reinforcing both the yes and no answers!
I met a fellow ski bum on the chairlift once and that worked out fine. To me that's a specialized situation because we were already having fun skiing the same trails, and our schedules would be perfectly synchronized so no need for example to share a key. Re belongings, folks who use campgrounds or for that matter any lodging at Yosemite other than the Ahwahnee Hotel don't really have door locks. What they call cabins are really just tents, for example. |

I really don't understand peoples fears of strangers.
Put it this way, if a serial killer's modus operandi is to kill people who ask them to share a hotel during a delayed flight or an over sold convention, they must be the worst serial killer in the world. Even if these situations came up a dozen times a year, the odds of you ever coming across someone other then a smuck traveler like yourself is so close to zero it's not even worth worrying about. During all those travels up to that point of sharing a room with a stranger you've participated in things far more likely to be a detriment to your health or property. I met some couch surfers in Tokyo a couple weeks ago, turned out they where nice people looking to see the world on the cheap, who would have guessed  |
June 2012 we took the Paris>Venice over-night train. I knew everyone in my female couchette. My husband slept in the couchette next door...with a nice family from India. But he said boy could they snore. I stayed at hostel in Dublin; however I purchased every bed in the room in order to keep strangers out.

Would you share a room with a stranger?
Generally not by choice, but I have done so on occasion, usually when on backpacker-type trips where no decent hostels were available.
And also on trains (including 2-berth cabins). |
