CVG-LAX back in 2002. I had no status on DL at the time, but they needed my seat in coach so they bumped me up to biz on a Buisiness Elite equipped 763.
Nice. |
About 5 or 6 years ago, from EWR-ORD. I had 16F and the seat was taken by a small child sitting next to his mother in 16E. The child originally had the middle seat in the last row of the plane. I don't want such a downgrade, I believe neither the person in the aisle or window of the last row wanted to get a middle seat, and the flight attendant sees this. I was offered a seat in first class since there were no other coach seats available.

I received my first opup from BA today from CW (62A) to First, which I had to decline due to the fact I was flying with my other half who was not offered the upgrade :( C'est la vie...

I was scheduled to fly nrt-jfk on aa in Y. I was in the aa lounge in nrt, and heard my name called on the pa--I was op uped to business class. [I never found out why (and didn't ask:))--but it might have something to do with a complaint about a flight a month earlier--I forgot the details now, 6 years later.]

About 12 years ago. HKG to LAX on CX. Day after a major typhoon had torn through HK disrupting flights. Flight was massively over booked due to cancellations over the previous 3 days.
Delighted to be upgraded from J to F for the first time. Looked right at the new (then) business class seats. Turned left to find that first was the old first and was worse than business! Think they had taken the plane out of mothballs to meet demand! Disappointment lasted about as long as it took for the first glass of Krug to arrive :) |
Your first OpUp
...has yet to occur :(

Our whole family were upgraded Y to C in the mid 90s because of overbooking on AC, I remember it vividly as my first transatlantic flight LHR-YVR - what a shock I had going in US a few years later in almost the very back row! (Oddly enough I got an upgrade to C on the way home that time too!)

NRT-PAR February last year on AF from Y to Y+ with my SO. Quite nice as this was a 777 with the new super cramped economy on a very long flight. No status with the airline and was on a super cheap ticket. Day before the flight I tried to checkin online and was denied. When arrived at the checkin counter was told they were happy to inform me I was upgraded.

My first (and so far only) op-up was in December 2008. Was flying MUC-JFK a few days after Christmas and the plane was heavily overbooked in Economy. I didn`t have a status with Lufthansa at this time but got an op-up to C at the gate.
It was a fun flight: As it was also my first longhaul flight in a premium cabin so everything was new and exciting - wheras my seat neighbor went to sleep short after takeoff and woke up just bevore landing... |
August, 1995, on an NW 747-400 NRT-DTW. My family lives in Japan and I was in college at the time, returning for my sophomore year. It was such a treat for an 18-year-old who'd never flown up front before.
I was summoned to the podium before boarding and asked if I "would mind" being moved to business class. My smile was all the answer they needed. I found myself on the upper desk toward the back on the right side, in the smoking section. After a few minutes, one of the FAs approached with a chart in her hand and asked if I would prefer a non-smoking seat. Naturally, I said yes. So I was moved a little further forward to a seat by the left side exit. I still remember being asked "orange juice or champagne?" while we were still on the ground. What teenage kid is going to pass up a taste of champers?:D Dinner was a lobster medallion appetizer followed by filet mignon and cheesecake with strawberry sauce for dessert. I liked the cheesecake so much I asked for another slice and told, "certainly." It was 10 years before my next transpac op-up, and it's happened a few more times since, but the memories of the first one will stay with me. Good times. |
During my UA gold status challenge earlier this year. Op-up from Y to J (booked cheapest fare class) from IAD-KWI-BAH.

My first op-up was when I was flying from SFO-TLV via JFK/CDG going and TLV-SFO via JFK on the return on TWA. Our travel agent did not protect us properly for the flights. I was 5 years old and remember telling my Father to ask if we can fly in First Class as we had to make a family event. I remember asking the agent if First Class checked in full? This agent was so amazed that a 5 year old knew more about traveling than some of the older travelers.
The agent was typing on her computer and I could see the seatmap so she gave us all First Class and forwarded the fee to the travel agency for the mistake that she made. So we then went to the First Class lounge(Ambassadors Club) and had a great time. The next op-up that I secured myself when I was flying alone from JFK-TLV-JFK-SFO on TWA. My Father paid the Unaccompanied minor fee and since the flight was delayed going to TLV I told the ticketing agent about my experience on TWA when I went with my family and she was typing away and said that there was not enough flight attendants in coach to look after me. So she said do you mind if I give you Trans World One? I said sure. My Father only paid $100 each way for the UA fee(: Plus I got bonus miles(: I was 12 at the time and enjoyed the steak and hot pancakes and french toast for breakfast. Op-Ups are fun(: |
I must be flying Etihad BRU-BKK for 5 years now, since they started flying to Brussels.
Began with FF no status, might have been silver, at check in the female clerk made a phone call and told me I got upgraded to business class, wow thanks. Guess they were overbooked and silver status might have helped to get the opup. At boarding time I handed my boarding card, went into a machine, was not given my boarding slip back, clerk told me to wait, machine was printing something, then was handed a new boarding pass, clerk said "have a nice trip in first sir" Thus from check in in Y to J and to F at the gate! Flying EY business class ever since, got one more opup to first (mostly no first on BRU-AUH_BRU) |
My only op-up was when I broke my ankle just before a flight from Beijing to Vancouver on Air Canada. My ankle was heavily splinted instead of being casted because my Chinese doctor told me that a cast would be horribly unforgiving during the flight (suggesting that I get the ankle casted immediately on arriving home.) He wrote a note for me suggesting that coach travel would make the ankle issue worse, and the Air Canada staff in Beijing op-uped me without any problem. (no status on AC, gold on *A)

I was only 20 or so years old. Qantas LAX to SYD, got there just before checkin closed (this was before the internet). The flight had been overbooked, and they got me into F on the next flight that left 20 minutes later but stopped in AUK, adding 5 hours to my total time. I didn't mind..it was incredible and I was grateful for it on that 14 hour haul. It was also F from AUK to SYD. Lucky break I guess.
I sure did miss it on my way back to LAX though, in coach. |
