Amen brother! I just spent the weekend in a fairly high-end hotel and was awakened by housekeeping two mornings in a row despite the Do Not Disturb sign. Arrrggh!

A few annoyances not on the level of being walked, but maybe 11-15...

1. Televisions which default to an earsplitting 110 dB each time you turn them on.

2. Curtains which do not meet in the middle. Last trip to Tokyo had some blackout curtains which overlapped keeping the room happily dark against the morning sun.

3. Damnable $2-ish charges for the unused in-room safe.

Yeah. Use the hanger with the pants clips.

This what I hate the most:

CMK10 [to someone at the concierge/front desk]: Hello, I'm looking for a good local restaurant that's not in the hotel. Can you suggest one?
Hotel Employee: We have our restaurant right here in the hotel :mad:

Not enough accessible power ports in reasonable places.

Having to move furniture, unplug TVs, radios, light fixtures to juice up the gear.

Exorbitant Room Service Menus - not exorbitant considering margins
Outrageous Parking Fees - dependent on location

Slow, Expensive Wi-Fi - varies, and there is also mobile internet

Surprised no one's mentioned my top pet peeve yet: Bedspreads & other items on the bed (such as decorative pillows) that aren't laundered between guest. Ugh. The first thing I do when checking into a room is to remove the bedspread.

Other pet peeves:
* Not enough pillows
* AC/heat controls that don't do anything
* Too few power outlets/power outlets in inconvenient locations

Just some trivial complaints from me...

1. Too many pillows! (There are like 7 per bed in this hotel) and Pillows are too mushi! :p

You've hit on my major gripe with hotels- The pillows, specifically the mushy, flaccid, wholly unsupportive quality thereof. I don't mind having multiple pillows on the bed as I can always remove the extra ones and stack them on a chair, but if there is going to be more than one pillow (and especially if there are four or more) provided with the bed then why can't some of those pillows be of the firm or extra firm variety?

Low-watt light bulbs that are too dim to read/work without getting eye strain or a headache.

danielonn Feb 22, 2012 10:56 pm

Here is my 15 things...

1. The clock in the room was set to 5 PM when it really is supposed to be 5 AM and I almost oversleep had I not set the wake up call.

2. The Alarm clock is set to wake me up at 3 AM when I don't need to be woken up at that early hour.

3. Room service trays left in the hallways.

4. 1/2 used shampoo containers .

5. Not making up the room when the sign is on the door for hours to make up the room.

6. The phone ringing in the middle of the night for the previous guest.

7. Breakfast items not being replenished.

8. The bill and credit card statement do not match.

9. The key card getting deactivated midway through my stay.

10.Putting me in a smoking room when clearly I stated I want non-smoking.

11. Hotel not enforcing quiet hours.

12. Pool temperature not heated/Spa lukewarm

13. Stale coffee in the lobby that is supposed to be replenished every hour or so.

14. The room is either too hot or too cold upon arrival.

15. Someone pulling a false fire alarm thus evacuating the hotel at 3 AM.

16. The "silent voicemail from a staff member at an odd hour at night" with the flashing bright voicemail waiting indicator light flashing.

This.

Optical mice are standard these days. They don't work on glass. When then do hotels insist on providing glass tables to work at?

That's my #1 too. I know it's to save money but a lightbulb should be bright enough to be able to use it.

Also
- towels which are too small. At least one decent sized towel per room would be nice.
- TVs which take 30 minutes to work out how to use them and require you to go through 10 menus. I just want to watch the news while I'm getting ready!
- door access cards which get wiped as soon as they get anywhere near my phone
- not enough sockets to recharge phones, laptops etc. I often have to unplug the TV or fridge.

1. Not refilling the mini-bar, especially water

2. Never enough power outlets, or all outlets in inconvenient locations. I'd like to charge my phone by the bed, not across the room.

3. Annoying staff who NEVER leave you alone. This is the difference between a FS, RC, etc... and an Aman. At the later, the staff never bother you, they know when the room is open and make it up then, at the former I feel like i'm getting up every 15 minutes to decline service or be asked if my stay is ok...HINT: It'd be a lot better if you left me alone!

4. Internet charges at 5-star hotels. If the $90 a night hotel can offer free wi-fi, please explain why I have to pay $500+ for the room and $20+/day for internet? So tacky.
