"Airlines gone to that great airport in the sky" article + photos

Photos of aircraft (TWA, Western, and others) as well as news of airlines in trouble and now grounded (e.g., Hungarian flag-carrier Malev which ceased operations last Friday).

I still remember YX's all signature planes. When I was a little kid, those big leather seats felt like a giant comfy recliner, and those cookies...

They forgot Muse Air, Morris Air, PeoplExpress, New York Air, Texas International, Air New England, Northeast, Air Florida, Presidential Airways, National (the newer all-757 one with the LAS hub), Independence Air, Reno Air, Western Pacific, Skybus, PBA, and those are just the US carriers I can think of off the top of my head.

Good grief - I never realized just how huge the list is.

"Click on for an admittedly incomplete list."

Yeah, well, any list that includes Air Gabon but leaves out PeoplExpress is inexplicably, broadly arbitrary.

Sure.. But that makes it more amazing that so many airlines were able to actually start up!!

I guess the carrier I miss most is TWA. I flew them the most back then. They had a great program where if you paid full fare for Y, you could upgrade to First for $20.
Back then, my company always paid for full Y in the event I had to change. So I always paid the $20 and flew first class.
Those were the days. :(

I flew Piedmont a bit, along with Northwest, and America West.

In my early career, I used to fly Eastern a lot, being based in the Northeast.

What a stroll down aviation lane.

That was my first big carrier also, including my first TATL flights. I still can't get that recorded 800 number voice out of my head. "Thank you for calling...T.W.A"
