Ah, I think I have it with regard to.....

15) TranStar, which was formerly Muse Air operating MD-80s, DC-9-50s and maybe even one DC-9-30 if I remember correctly.

Southwest Airlines acquired Muse Air and then changed the name to TranStar. Lamar Muse was formerly with Southwest but then started his own airline. WN subsequently shut Transtar down.

BTW, I flew Muse Air several times between California (LAX), Texas (AUS & HOU), Louisiana (MSY) and Florida (MIA). It was a great airline!

Well, welcome to the thread! It's one of the best on flyertalk, in my opinion!

And yes...

29. It would be Royal West!

And that engenders yet another question:

What type of jet aircraft did Royale Airlines operate?

Extra bonus points will be earned if you can name their turboprop aircraft as well.

3) "Free Champagne and FC legroom"--- Air Jamaica (Incorrect - Air Jamaica does offer free Champage but they did not offer First Class legroom for all passengers)
11) "Gas Light Service"--- Mohawk correct
8) "Royal Hawaiian Service"--- Delta or United? which one...? :))

Regarding Petroleum Club flights to Dallas, it wasn't American but it was aboard an airline other than Braniff that offered 727 service into Dallas.

Speaking of Muse Air...

I'm sorry, cs57, it was United. It was a great service in its day, much more elaborate than any of the so called "First Class" services being offered to the islands today. Catering was inspired by Trader Vic's and the Mai Tais remain amongst the finest I have ever had anywhere.

1.) What airline offered Four Star Service on its longer flights across America?

2.) What airline used to advertise the famous "Hunt Breakfast" flights?

3.) What airline offfered First Class legroom and free Champagne on all of its flights back in the 1970s?

4.) What airline used to be famous for its promotional shot glasses?

5.) What airline offered "SunShip Service" to Florida with its DC-9s?

6.) What airlirline used to offer "Fiesta Service" on its flights to Mexico?

7.) What airline offered "Gold Coast Service" in the 1980s and 90s?

8.) What airline used to offer "Royal Hawaiian Service" on its flights to Hawaii?

9.) What airline used to be known as "The Alaska Flag Line"?

10.) What airline used to fly "The Route of The Gold Strikes"?

11.) What airline used to offer "Gas Light Service"?

12.) What current US airline's First Class service was branded "Royal Service" back in the 1960s?

13.) What airline used to offer "Petroleum Club Service" on its 727 flights to Dallas?

14.) What airline used to offer "Golden Falcon Service" initially on its DC-7s and lateer on its DC-8s?

2. Hunt breakfast flights were on Western.

3. I would guess Frontier?

4. Guessing here... Southern? I remember I used to have a decent collection of about a dozen shot glasses from Southern. I have no idea what ever happened to them. :(

5. Ozark has SunShip service!

6. I am going to guess Western has Fiesta service.... that rings a bell in my mind for some reason.

7. Gold Coast Service was Alaska Airlines.

13. If it wasnt American, I would guess Braniff?

14. Eastern!

3. I would guess Frontier? Nope, Frontier offered First Class legroom throughout but no free Champagne though complimentary little bottles of Dos Hermanos or Mateus wine were served with the excellent meals.

13. If it wasnt American, I would guess Braniff? No, not Braniff although they were the major 727 operator at DFW. Here's a hint - the service was into DAL, before DFW opened.

14.) What airline used to offer "Golden Falcon Service" initially on its DC-7s and lateer on its DC-8s?

I remember the Mateus wine service on Frontier!

And with regard to the "Petroleum Club Service".....

Was it the original Frontier with the B727-200 DEN-DAL?

BTW, congrats to Seat 2A for the success of this excellent thread!

That's the ticket! Frontier used to offer First Class service on those 727s, all of which were later sold to Braniff.

Well thank you, jlemon but let me extend congratulations and thanks to all of us who have participated thus far. It's definitely been a team effort! ^^

Yes, it's been quite a bit of fun with more questions to come!

BTW, I goofed up a bit with my answer, I think, as I believe Frontier's service at this time was offered on their B727-100 aircraft as I do not believe they operated the 72S at that point. What say you, Seat 2A?

Seat 2A Feb 17, 2012 1:55 pm

While I'm pretty sure Frontier operated its 727s into the early 1970s (I think the last of them was sold to Braniff iin 1972) I'm not sure of the timeline on Petroleum Club services. The 727-100s arrived in 1966 and the -200s came online in 1968. So far as I know, the 727s were always operated in a two class configuration, so that might suggest the PC service extended to the 72S flights as well. By the time I started working at Frontier, we were strictly standard class 737-200s, CVR-580s and a couple of DH6s.

OK, lets have some from across the Atlantic (which our mainly US participants can still have a shot at).

1) Which US-manufactured airliner was known to several UK airlines as the "Pionair" ?

2) Which two European airlines bought the Boeing Stratocruiser ?

3) Where was the BAC One-Eleven built ?

4) Which aircraft type operates the world's shortest flight, in the Scottish Orkney Islands ?

5) What was the first Lockheed type in British Airways colours ? Which prominent political event happened in front of one of them ?

6) What is notable in USA aviation about Northwest's BAe RJ tail number N536XJ, delivered May 2000 ?

7) Where in London is an aviation museum in an Art-Deco former airport terminal building ?

8) Which was the first scheduled jet airliner across the North Atlantic ? Who was disappointed by this ?

cs57 Feb 17, 2012 2:31 pm

3) BAC One Eleven was built at Hurn.

4) Orkney Islands (shortest flight)----Britten Norman Islander.

2) BOAC and ? (did not find another european airline in the production list, or my books)

Thanks to all for these GREAT questions!!
