TV remote controls that don't let you set the correct aspect ratio. A couple of times I've asked for a refund on the movie I paid to watch because I didn't want to watch it in stretch mode.

Shallow bath tubs. Hotels in Asia and Europe that I've stayed at have deeper tubs where I could enjoy a relaxing hot bath and have the water cover my chest when lying down. In the United States, my chest sticks out of the water and gets cold.

Being a Hilton Diamond member and never getting an upgrade. Sometimes they say they gave me an upgrade, but the room looks no different from rooms at Holiday Inns or other chains. What is an upgraded room supposed to look like?

How can a hotel that is on the Hoppa route from LHR not offer anything (except the two plastic-wrapped biscuits on the tea tray in one's room) for travelers who have to leave before 7:30AM, especially when some passengers (me and five others on that day) have to leave at 5:30AM?

And I also echo the complaint about lousy TV offerings. I once stayed in a motel somewhere in the exurbs of Chicago (during a disruption of service at ORD) that offered only sports channels and Fox News--not even any local Chicago channels. When I realized that, I resolved to check out as soon as possible in the morning and hang around the airport while waiting for my 4PM flight.

In a nice Crowne Plaza now. Speed test is showing 0.06 Mpbs. It's pretty painful.

Of course, they don't always use plumbers, either, apparently. The sink in my current room has the hot/cold backwards.

It doesn't take a %#@& electrician to buy a bunch of 6-outlet power-strips and plug one into the one outlet that already exists in every room near the bed/nightstand. And the wholesale cost of these items in bulk is what, like $3 each? Then they could plug the clock radio, the phone, and a couple of lamps into that power stick, and still leave the guest a couple of available outlets to use.

I usually don't bother but the best hotel bathtub was in KL, Malaysia. I forget the name of the hotel but the tub was huge, filled quickly and you could laze there in while drinking from the minibar and looking our over the Petronas Towers. A great way to soak the KL humidity and pollution out of your system.

Good bathtubs earn hotels extra points in my book. I enjoy drinking beers in a bubble bath at nice hotels.

I also found one of the best tubs to be in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was at the Pan Pacific Hotel at the airport. The VERY best was at Hotel Asia in Singapore. Sadly, that hotel was demolished three or four years ago.

I agree with the problem of poor lighting. Sometimes it is almost impossible to read anything. Last week I stayed at the O'Hare Hilton and the floor lamp didn't work. So even the best hotel chains have their shortcomings.

As I said, this is illegal in many places. The rule against permanent use of extension cords is to prevent cheap builders from putting in one outlet and just dangling six extension cords from it.

Yup, I am a light sleeper, the sound of the paper can and does wake me up every stay (along with everything else - I tend not to sleep well in hotels!). Depending on the hotel (and how quickly I need to be out) I will often ask they don't put it under the door - but then most seem to do it anyway! The sooner they 'go paperless' and email me the check out info, the better!

The papers, it is not a thud like someone throwing it, but more of a soft 'dunk' sound on the carpet.

I sat in a lukewarm hot tub last month, because I didn't work the controls properly (no markings, turned it one way, it was cold, turned it the other, it was lukewarm. As I was in the tropics and it was early in the morning, I figured the hot water wasn't on yet, so sat in my 'hot' tub in lukewarm water - not ideal, but not terribly bad given the fabulous view from the balcony the hot tub was on. It was only a couple of hours later when my companion used the shower, that my error was pointed out - had I left the 'cold' side on for a minute, it would eventually become hot - the lukewarm was the cold side!)
