Smoking in the Bathroom

I was on AA25 BOS-LAX yesterday, about halfway through the flight the FA makes an announcement that Its a Federal offense punishable by Law to smoke on an Aircraft. She continued on by saying, whomever just smoked in the bathroom better not do it again and we think we know who you are! I didn't wait around when we landed to see if any Air marshals or Police were summoned. Two things come to mind. 1. Nicotine is a powerful drug, 2. Are the smoke alarms in the bathrooms just decoys?
Has anyone else experienced this?

Although this happened on an AA plane it really is not airline specific. Therefore we will be forwarding to the TravelBuzz forum with a redirect left in the AAdvantage forum

What I don't get is why so many plane bathrooms still have the ash trays in the doors.

Example of that in this video:

The ashtrays are required for those bozo's that do try to light up. There still needs to be a proper receptacle for the cigs.

They are real, the typical trick is to stretch a condom over it.

Or a hotel shower cap, or stuffing wet tissue over it. Dumb thing to do, though.

The alarm worked on me!!!

A number of years ago when smoking was still allowed, I was travellng on a UA flight in F class (which was full) in the non-smoking row.

I saw a man go into the bathroom so I hopped up and lit a cigarette to smoke while standing and waiting for him to exit the bathroom...unfortunately for me, his stay was very brief and I walked in to the bathroom with my lit cigarette. I closed the door and all hell broke loose with the smoke alarm shrieking.

I panicked and immediately put the cigarette out in the ash tray and exited...quite red-faced I will admit.

The FA immediately went in to the bathroom (I don't recall whether she had to reset or turn off the alarm or if it went out on its' own) and then she came to me (wide-eyed) and asked what I did with the cigarette.

I told her I put it in the ash tray and she asked if I was sure I put it in the ash tray or down the toilet.

I confirmed the ash tray and she asked me the brand of cigarette...which I told her and she returned to the bathroom (to check the ash tray...I guess?) and nothing more was said.

I was extremely embarrassed and never tried the stunt again.

The smoke alarms DO work!

reward for turning in smoker

THis thread prompts me to ask:

Do you get anything for turning in a smoker?

I was on a transatlatic flight, and the guy in front of me comes back to his seat smelling of smoke. Three minutes later, FA over intercom says "Dont smoke in the bathroom, violates law, safety, etc."

If you rat out the smoking person, any chance for $ or miles?

Thx

I wondered the same thing. So once I asked a Flight Attendant. First I asked if she knew how old the plane was. She said something like 3 years, so then I asked her why they still have ashtrays in the lavatory. She said it's standard equipment. I thought it was strange.

I bet alot of people try and use their cell phones in the bathroom. I would what kind of alarm they can put in them to detect phone cell phone use.

you need to send a note to the FAA identifying the airline, flight number, route, and date/time, explaining how the flight crew permitted a passenger to endanger the aircraft and everyone on board by failing to take action for this violation of law.

While it may be against the law, it is common practice that when your first caught you get a warning first, then are arrested the second time. Whilst dangerous, it is not obvious to everyone that you cannot smoke, especially with confusing signals like a no smoking sign right next to an ashtray.

Besides the crew only thought they knew who it was. Unless your caught red handed you cannot blame anyone.

Your screen name fits you almost...(should be old crab) to a "t"!

I guess you have forgotten the "oh so many years" that smoking was allowed on flights!!!

At one time at any seat and then there were "non-smoking" and "smoking" seats and then "none"!

Your post reminds me of the people who, now, are "oh so offended" by cigarette smoke but when they were young and hanging in bars or other places the smoke would be so thick you couldn't see across the room but that didn't bother them then!!!

Just venting as a former smoker who finds others telling me how to live "my" life (which has now gone beyond just smoking) as being offensive and, definitely, hypocritical!!!

But, I must say, I don't believe in breaking the law....
