A little off-topic, but in the same general vein: when I was younger (late 90's) I remembering being at FRA and seeing a large number of small model aircraft in glass display cases. Do those still exist, and if so, where?

Is the one at NRT terminal 1 still open?

Yup!

At DCA, there's Gravelly Point Park, at the foot of RWY 19. It's accessible by foot/bike along the Mt. Vernon Trail. Free parking is also available.

I took a train one stop from MUC to a station called "Besucherpark," which has an artificial hill (with a small admission fee) from which to gaze at air traffic.

Then, I walked back to the airport, thinking that I still haven't flown AB.

Recent Besucherpark LH Metal spotting and non LH-metal spotting from my trip to MUC. (redirects to my site).

I know Tokyo Haneda and Dusseldorf have them...anyone know of any others. The USA Today article seems to be mostly domestic airports...looking for more interesting international airports.

Singapore doesn't have a dedicated spot, but next to the McDonalds (Airside) gives a great vantage point.

Dubai has a great view from the food court, but better from the Irish Pub since it's only one pane of glass instead of 2.

In T1 or T2? I'm there next week to visit the FRA archives and can try to find it.

For what it's worth, TTN has one. It's enclosed on the second floor of the terminal with a lot of windows in a room that features the airport restaurant. Like F9 planes and business jets? It's your place to be! :D

Unfortunately, I don't remember. Thanks for offering, but don't worry about it too much.

The Sheraton Deira in Dubai is known as the unofficial spotting outpost. You can go to the roof of the hotel and watch them fly over head. The hotel even offers Planespotter Packages. Here is a post from a recent trip (with pictures)

Spectacular photos LufthansaFlyer. I think next long layover in MUC I will ditch the lounge in favor of Besucherpark.
The escorted EL AL is interesting.
What time span you needed to catch all those LH heavies?
Shame no 748 and 388 (aside EK one) in MUC.

Mid to late afternoon will see the biggest concentration of A330 and A340 since they are departing for the US at that point. I believe the latest one goes to SFO. Late morning/early afternoon sees a lot of continental European departures/arrivals.

The Besucherpark is far more entertaining than the lounge. There's a Ju52 that you can climb into as well as a Super Connie and vintage Swiss bird. Also there's Tante Ju's which is a fairly decent resetaurant, along with a visitor center where you can by aviation souvenirs. If you have 3 hours+, its a no brainer! :)

If you need a transit hotel room at SIN, over in T1 you can get a room with a runway view. Need to put a special request in when you make the reservation.

When I had a room at transit hotel last month, I had a sweet view of an active runway and touchdown zone.

USA Today published a fairly comprehensive list of airport observation decks around the world, could be a useful reference for anyone wanting to see if an airport has an observation deck and if the view is any good:

Its a good piece, but how can you overlook MUC's Besucherpark? He mentioned other observation areas that are outside other airports, but missed the easy one....

Yeah, the list ain't perfect, some airports are missing. But it's still good to have it as a quick reference if you have the urge to go check out the observation deck of an airport you haven't been to before.

What other airports would you add? Which ones are offsite? The list is mostly about decks onsite at the airport, not viewing areas near an airport.
