CDG, Charles de Gaulle in France. Been there :)

tfar Oct 18, 2009 8:22 pm

The "add a Y to initials" idea is brilliant.

Now we have three methods:

1. John William Smith > JWS
2. John William Smith > JSW
3. John Smith in Canada > YJS

To the great dismay of our example John, he has no airport under any of these methods.

I just found out that YTR is Trenton, Ontario, Canada.

So now I got Trenton, Ramadan and Oslo.

I think it may be easier for me to just drive from Canberra to Sydney... But Brazil does sound nice.

trooper Oct 18, 2009 11:27 pm

Under the Canadian "rule" I get YDB..

Burwash Landings.. even further North at 61'....

At least that one has a runway length listed (6000ft which seems respectable)

Seems I am fated to "be" isolated airfields with no commercial service! :D

Capricorn Oct 19, 2009 4:34 am

CEI = Chiang Rai, Thailand

apparently in the far north. Maybe one day.

stut Oct 19, 2009 4:40 am

SJP - Sao Jose Do Rio Preto, Brazil

Always meant to go to Brazil, and never made it. Maybe this is my excuse ;)

mattm199 Oct 19, 2009 4:44 am

Yay!
Monte Carlo for me! (MCM)

mhnadel Oct 19, 2009 7:17 am

Hmm, Mullen, NE (population: 490) is apparently the only remaining town in Hooker County. I suspect MHN is a general aviation airport, so not one I'm likely to be heading to.

marbe166 Oct 19, 2009 7:18 am

JMB - Jamba, Angola. Interestingly enough it is located almost exactly in a straight line south of my home town. NRK is at 16:15 E (58:35 N), JMB is at 16:02 E (14:41 S). Check it out on GCM: http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=N...avy&MAP-STYLE=

Well, unless your initials begin with I, J or X you stand a chance of being able to match up with an ICAO Code, give that a try!

Uptown_Girl Oct 20, 2009 12:17 am

This is fun; I got an airport I didn't even know existed.

JCH - Qasigiannguit, Greenland

Wikipedia tells me that the aiport is serviced by Air Greenland (which I also didn't know existed) and the town which shares the same name, has fewer than 2000 residents.

I remember one of the first times I flew JFK-NRT, while flying over northern Canada I saw many little towns with airstrips but no visible roads, I'm assuming they got everything by air.

boxedlunch Oct 20, 2009 2:16 am

Fun...but I doubt that I (or anyone else on this board) will ever ever go to Kabri Dar, Ethiopia (ABK)!

I actually flew out of JCH - it was about 10 years ago now - in a Sikorsky helicopter on Groenlandsfly (as Air Greenland was at the time). The S.25 is the biggest thing that could land there, and does bring in supplies during the winter. In the summer, there are regular ferries up and down the coast - in particular to the larger towns of Ilulissat and Aasiaat (both of which boast sizeable fish processing plants).

Qasigiannguit is a very pretty little town - the name is West Greenlandic for 'small spotted seals', and they're there in abundance. It's a great spot for walking, and the town itself has some pretty spots.

Thanks for posting the pics. :) Since it's very unlikely I'll have the opportunity to visit Greenland (let alone Qasigiannguit itself,) at least I have a hint of what I'm missing.

Mine is the home of Airbus..... pretty cool, eh? I've been there, though not to the airport, and I also missed the tour of the facility!

My wife's is Alamosa, Colorado. Only a couple hours away from us. I think the only flights out of there are to / from DEN on Great Lakes, so it's not likely will fly in / out of there!

And yes, I actually knew this stuff *before* this thread. I'm a geek.
