Nokia Help?? - ask here

Hi

I see a lot of questions about nokia products. I work for Nokia in R&D in some capacity. The opinions listed here are my own, and do not represent the views or policies of Nokia.

If you have any questions about how to use Nokia products, or have questions about specs etc, ask away and I will do my best to find the answer, or direct you to where you may find it.

I am busy, and so cannot guarantee to answer in timely fashion, and I cannot guarantee I will always be able to give an answer (or the right one) but I will try :)

If you have problems with a broken device - I will likely tell you everytime to contact Nokia CARE - and this should be the first stop for troubleshooting problems.

Amazing thread... thanks for starting it. With my N97 here, I anticipate being a regular... :D

Thank you for starting this thread and helping out. One of the most annoying things for me is the inability to display 'foreign' languages.

My phone doesn't have the Chinese language, and if a SMS in Chinese arrives, I see a lot of blocks. I don't want the menu and so forth in Chinese, but I do want to be able to see these SMSes. My 6 year old Sony Ericsson can do that...

Of all the research I've done, Nokia just can't do it...

The second thing is the phone's insistance to change all my appointments time if I change my timezone on the phone. Someone has explained the rationale behind it, but it makes no sense to me. It'd be good if I (the user) can have the option to not have the phone being this overly helpful.

Device = N95-8Gb, running v30 firmware.

My understanding is the same as yours. The products typically have a range of supported languages. SE used unicode for the language support.

I would hope this would be rectified in future symbian releases. The new symbian foundation has huge plans for making the OS more accessible and re-usable, and I am pretty sure this will be fixed. But sadly for your phone not too many options.

The second one is my HATE also. I give up and don't change the time-zone, I just change the time. Keeps the appointments in the right place. But a nightmare if you add appointments while traveling I will agree.

This does improve with newer products.

Symbian also happily uses unicode to display text. In fact, I have patched my E61i to display webpages in Korean. I wouldn't recommend trying to do this for Chinese though, and especially not on a N95-8Gb.

cressers, what a great thread and nice of you to give some time :)

I have a question, until recently I had a nokia E71, but was frustrated with the email issues...lack of HTML, folder support, poor calendar support etc etc Moving to a windows mobile device things are MUCH better but I miss the form factor of the E71.

Is there plans to enable "mainstream" mobile email support on this device?

Hi - Of course I cannot comment on the future unpublished plans, but the current delivery of mail for exchange will continue to grow I am sure.

There is of course roadsync which does everything you wanted.....

:D thank you. I used roadsync for a trial, but couldn't really justify the cost, esp as my handset was sim free to start with. I guess my company will reallocate it when I eventually hand it back, and I'll get used to a winmo device instead.

How can one type accented/umlauted/etc. characters on a phone with a standard English keyboard?
There must be a way, right? :p

Does holding down the key work? That's what I do on my BB.

Bottom right of the keyboard is the "Ctrl" button. Hold it and press the letter you want accented / umlauted etc. I tried a circonflexe however no luck sorry :)

And what's this BB talk in this thread? :p

On my E63 the CTRL doesn't have that function, but the CHR does. Thanks!

Pressing CHR just brings up the symbol menu. I hadn't thought to hold it in while typing a letter.

I've tried Roadsync more than once. I have a licensed copy that I upgraded to last fall's version. The program seemed to suck a lot of resources and I didn't find the experience all that great.

One of my E51's is constantly searching for a wi-fi signal, which drains the battery faster. I've tried turning this off in multiple areas, but am obviously missing something.

Also
PC suite tells me that I should update my phone's software, but when I try online, it errors every time. I took them to the Nokia Service Centre in Bangkok and they wanted to charge me to update them, as they are both out of warranty.

Firmware for E71 on Rogers Canada

First of all, thanks for starting this thread!

I have an E71 purchased and operating through Roger's provider in Ontario, Canada.

My question is: What can I do to get the latest firmware release when the nokia PC Suite software tells me that 100.07.76 is the latest version available to me? Do you know if Nokia plans to give Rogers the latest firmware?

Thanks!

E51 and OMA

Thanks for starting this thread - here's my question.....

I have an E51, which is a great phone, with one problem for me.... The Nokia implementation of OMA will not allow a calendar sync further forward than 30 days. For me, this is a real PITA as I only have the E51 as a diary and it's no good when I get a request for a date further out than one month.

Is there any firmware upgarde likely in the future, or am I stuck with this?

2.5mm jack problems

I have a Nokia 5610 Expressmusic. I try and try, but cannot seem to get the ability to listen to stereo music, much less be able to also answer calls.

I have bought several adapters and headsets with no success.

I would really like to use a standard set of earphones that I like.

Is there a compatible device that has the mic, a button to answer calls etc, and will allow me to plug in my STEREO earphones with a std 3.5mm jack.

I'm about to resort to wire splicing and black electrical tape! (or a new phone)

Please help me,
Jensfan

The Nokia AD-44 does what you want, and will let you control the music playback too.

Flashing a Phone (N97)

Hi cressers,

I'm likely to purchase a N97 in the coming days, but the only ones I can find are grey imports (with no network specific firmware) or local versions with network specific firmware.

What I really want is a local version (AU/NZ) with no network specific firmware. Therefore, I'm considering flashing the phone when I get it. I've never done this before, so would appreciate some advice (no raincoat jokes, please). :) I've updated firmware on my N95 with network specific firmware before though.

I've read a bit about it on the web, and the process as I understand it is:

- Change the product code to a local non-network specific one (not simple)
- Update the firmware

I understand I'll void my warranty and I'll run the risk of bricking the phone.

Any pointers and hints you can provide? Any other risks I should be aware of?

Thanks.

The first thing to do is un-install pc suite and download the latest version, which is now OVI suite. This includes the SW updater, as well as a lot of newer features.

Then try again. It can be a bit tricky sometimes, but it should work fine.

Hi - firmware updates with operator specific SW are decided, rather unsuprisingly, by the operator rather than the manufacturer. Typically the number of releases is kept low, and many fixes are rolled into one, as well as new features etc.

If you want the official release, contact rogers and see if they have one coming.

You could also have a look on e71blog and see if there is anything about changing the NAM variant code, but this would void the warranty and so I could no recommend that....

Hi - clearly changing the product code voids the warranty, and you mention this.

Flashing the SW is not usually a troublesome process, but things can go wrong. For example, there is always the risk that the original product version may have different HW than another product code, and so while a simple product code change seems easy there is the risk something can go wrong. This is unlikely, but feasible.

If something did go wrong, you may be liable for the costs of repair.

If you are aware of this, then go for it - there are no real tips other than ensure you have the latest SW installed on the PC and follow the instructions to the letter.

./Calendar/Events?/dr(-30,60) in the Remote Database. Works fine on my old Sony P900 with the same server (even -30,180).

With the E51 I get "Unable to open database" error when trying to synch.

./Calendar is all that works, but then I'm tied to the server defaults of 0,30

It looks like I'm going to have to get an ipod touch just for my calendar!

I thought the AD-44 had a 2.5mm plug and the AD-54 had a 3.5mm one; and that the 5610 had a 2.5mm socket. But I defer to cressers...

From everything I have read at Nokia Europe, the new Ovi suite is not for the E51 (I have one). It's not in the list and it is not returned in the device search. Do you know something that the website does not?

It's still the Nokia Suite for the E51.

PC Suite vs N-Series PC Suite vs Ovi Suite

I think it a bit confusing why we need 3 different products to do largely the same thing. I understand part of it is due to the device, but surely that can be fairly easy to distinguish...?

As a N-series device owner (finally got the N97 the other day), which one should I be using?

I use it to sync contacts and calendars from Outlook and the occasional map loading and application installing. I copy files as well, but I just hook up the device with my PC and treat it as a storage device.

I also sync music, but I do it through WMP.

It'd be nice to have one Suite that does all that (and make me a coffee while it's at it)...

OVI suite is the only one you should need. Ovi suite will become more and more useful in interacting with your device, but there is a large legacy of products that need to be supported, and so the others will remain but new products will use OVI suite.

Hi - I checked initially on Nokia specs and 5610 xpress music has the 3.5mm jack (AD54)

When mention of the 2.5mm jack came, I also re-checked on nokiausa.com incase the north american variant had 2.5mm, but it has 3.5mm.

I have an E71, and am greatly enjoying it. My question concerns operating system (and any other) updates.

I acquired the phone in late November 2008, and have not had the need to add any applications - my needs are met by the apps that came with the phone.

Going with the "why disturb something that is working" philosophy, am I missing out on any radically important functionality or new features by not upgrading the OS?

I'm not a techno-phobe and have no problem updating my work or personal computer systems, but this is my first smartphone, so I am a little inexperienced in the need-to-upgrade field. The phone is a US-spec E71-2, acquired factory-unlocked.

Thanks for any advice/responses.

If it works fine, no issues, then no need. Any updates would likely be minimal. Look out for any updates via AT&T and you should be able to download over the air.

if you use the pc SW that came with the phone, that will inlude the nokia sw updater, and this will tell you if there is any new SW available.

Have a look at store.ovi.com you may find some useful apps there. Many are free, or fun, or stupid, or expensive ;)

I would look at files.ovi.com also.

Hi cressers and thanks for initiating this thread.
When travelling frequently through different time zones its really mess up the calendar appointments. I have been in contact several times with Nokia support and looking through all the forums related to this issue and there are many travellers experiencing this problem, but no solutions. Except from happy people telling me to calculate the time zone when entering the appointment - clever..:-), but not the way I want to work.
I can see from your previous answer in this topic that there will most likely not be a patch coming soon to repair this malfunction, so if I install another pim/calendar in my E71 can I remove the built in Nokia calendar?
