Any FTers use this phone...?

thomas199023 Apr 10, 2009 3:38 pm

Isn't even close to release date here. I do have the N96 though. Pretty decent phone although a bit slow.

Slow....? Could you elaborate? Is this because of the user interface or the OS, or are you refering to the recycle time of the camera...?

thomas199023 Apr 11, 2009 4:22 am

I had a N95 before this one, and it was a lot faster.

If you read some reviews on the internet about the N96 you will find that navigating threw menu's is rather slow and the applications sometimes are as well. This is mainly due to Nokia putting a smaller processor unit in it. It can be bothersome having to wait a couple seconds while its loading but I don't care so much. The battery life isn't that good as well, it works for about 4-5 days.

That is the only really problem I have encountered with the phone. For the rest it's perfect. The camera makes really good quality pictures. if you want some examples all of the photo's in this TR are made with it.

The navigation works pretty good as well. though I dont use Nokia's software I use freeware: Nav4all It doesn't cost a thing and tough the graphics aren't that good it brings you from a to b and it has never let me down.

If you have any other questions please ask.

Follow up... does the N97 pack a more powerful processor than the N96,,,?

yevlesh2 Apr 11, 2009 11:08 pm

Did Nokia announce when it's coming out in North America yet?

I don't think it's actually available anywhere at the moment.

The N97's processor hasn't been confirmed yet. It will be an ARM11 though, according to statements made by some Nokia product team members.

The N95 runs a 332 MHz ARM11, but is dual core (the baseband has its own CPU). The N96 runs a 264 MHz ARM9 and is also dual core. The E71 and 5800 run 369 MHz ARM11s, but are single core.

What all that means is, who knows...

Thanks.... I thought the N97 was already out in the USA.

Gaucho100K Apr 21, 2009 8:19 pm

Whats the scoop on the release date in the USA... or will it be released first in Europe...?

Gaucho100K Apr 21, 2009 8:35 pm

UK's play.com is claiming to have the N97 by mid June.... so I guess that will be the first availability...?

typical Apr 22, 2009 7:23 am

It'll almost certainly go to Europe and Asia first.

Nokia have said nothing beyond Q2, meaning June.

Gaucho100K Apr 23, 2009 1:58 pm

Yes, I continue to search and all sources seem to have a June date... but prices seem to have risen... (???)

typical Apr 23, 2009 2:31 pm

Nobody will know the exact cost until it is released... as it gets closer no doubt some companies will try to milk early adopters though.

What is attracting you to the N97 anyway?

I didnt know that this was a bad option for a smartphone. Am I mistaken??

As follow up... here are the highlights of what me thinks are positives for this phone:

- 32GB memory + 16GB expansion
- large screen of decent resolution
- full size keyboard
- various connectivity options
- design
- Nokia brand name & support

Gaucho100K Apr 24, 2009 5:07 am

Some more on why I think the N97 is a good option...

From a Nokia site? :)

Most of the arguments against the iPhone are incorrect or meaningless. The biggies for me are the QWERTY keyboard and the removable battery. You do a heap of wireless posting so the QWERTY would have to be one of your top priorities.

I do prefer my E71 to my wife's iPhone 3G - just....

I dont argue against the IPhone... if Apple comes out with a new generation handset that has a qwerty I will consider it.

Any idea if any of the US carries will pick it up?

Cant you just buy the handset and insert an existing SIM card...?

Sure can do, but then I would have to pay 100% of the price without incentives. Like $500 vs. $99, or similar...

Gaucho100K Apr 30, 2009 4:08 am

Ah yes.... the carrier subsidies are indeed sweet, although the fine print of some of the contracts that they want you to enter into to enjoy some of the subsidies are kinda' lousy.... do the consumer laws allow the phone companies to get away with lots of small print stuff...?

N series are all about exciting, cutting edge features so none of these rumors are impossible. At the moment, I use an E71 I bought in Hong Kong and for me, this is the true successor to my 9210. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't do fax (which my 9210 still does with my UK Virgin Mobile SIM a few times every year)!

BTW, I can still see the old 9210 coming in useful. I was using it to reply to emails to the UK during my nightly 1 hour taxi drive from the office to the hotel in Bombay, back before mobile packet data existed. We still operate in places where mobile data is hard and circuit switched (9600) data is the only way (though even the most limited parts of the world are slowly going GPRS and 3G).

I got my E71 through Rogers wireless provider in Canada.

Nothing but good things to say about the E71 (except the camera quality, but I never use the camera).

Highly recommended for email, wifi, gps mapping, Outlook synced calendar, etc.

Related question... what is the largest micro-SD card that you can use with this phone... Im assuming there is a max size card that the OS will support, or am I mistaken...??

It'll take an SDHC MicroSD, so at the moment 16GB is the largest, but 32GB will probably be here in a year or so.

As for your PM - you are asking the wrong person :D I am not a Symbian fan myself. Phones out there at the moment that I really like are the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1/Android phone) and the HTC Touch Pro 2.

Not an iPhone fan, and not a Symbian fan. I'd pick Blackberry over Symbian.

You got lucky! When they woke up this morning, they realized that the coupon was not meant to work like that :D

The correct price was supposed to be $629, without the free Bluetooth headset.

Those that snagged this for $454 should keep their fingers crossed that Nokia honors the deal.
