The Vulkano line of units is quite impressive - WiFi, HDMI out, media player, DVR (records to USB/SD or SATA) and best of all, free mobile players.

I believe they are now chargin $12.99 for the mobile clients now.

i have clients who are xpats and love us television.


also used it for clients to watch live tv in their cars.

Only on the cheapest players - the mobile clients for mine (and for my Belkin @TV) are still free.

I didnt read this whole thread but i looked into this and ruled out it.

The rationale? Hotels Wi - fi usually will not support streaming, many hotels will actually monitor your data usage and lock your MAC address of your device out of the internet after you watch about 20 minutes of video. The process for getting it back up and running requires a phone call, a hold time, an explanation, and usually begging for forgiveness.

Doesnt make much since to invest in a sling box when even if your home internet can handle it you have almost no chance of being able to use it due to the wi fi on the other end.

Not that AT&Ts 4g LTE is in so many cities, a simple netflix app and my grandfathered unlimited data plan are a much better solution. (even if it means watching reruns)

I've never had a problem with them shutting me down. The last time I stayed in a Motel6, they told me they were blocking P2P traffic, but otherwise it was fine. Watched a few hours via Slingbox.

I've stayed at Novotel, Mercure, Sheraton, Hampton, Holiday Inn, Aloft, Marriott, Best Western, Quality Inn, and Hiltons within the last few years. Aside from a few that didn't have enough bandwidth to download a .txt file, not one was a problem for my SB.

I have a couple of the new 500's, they work pretty nicely. I do like the ability to setup via TV and not having to use a computer and having it work over wifi is nice, no cables. YES and HDMI (which others have had for several versions) I haven't really had any HDCP issues yet, other than a couple HBO issues.

I HAVE found they work with my slingplayer for MAC and for PC, so not sure why they wouldn't. And yes, they don't TECHNICALLY work with slingcatcher yet, but there is a work around if one searches hard enough.

Not sure if it was here, but you can change the name of the unit via the web player, just go to settings, info and click on the name on the bottom right. change to whatever you like.

How did you get it to work with the PC/MAC version of Slingplayer? (not web based)

I'll admit I am not tech savvy, but I don't feel like this product has been creating much attention when it has much potential. Is it just me or does anyone else feel like that? I just noticed that this thread was started in 2008, but I came to know of it only this year. I have had cable TV with a DVR for the past two years and never knew of this.

I like things that don't have darned monthly fees and this is something that has caught my attention.

I've had slingbox since v1. Also did a lot of beta testing for them back when I was on a Palm Treo phone. I've also used it from all around the world even in Beijing. I've never had any issues and even over hotel WiFi but if they have an ethernet plug I plug in. In the past few years with the advent of HDMI TVs in hotels I carry an HDMI cable and connect my MacBook Air to the TV and can watch on a regular TV. Worth every penny.

I too have had slingbox since v1. Recently, I have been unable to connect my iPad App over hotel wifi. However, I also have the iPhone app on my iPad and using that I am able to connect. So far it has just been one hotel, but since airlines can block streaming on plane wifi, I wonder whether this is the same type of situation. I have not upgraded the iphone app on the ipad, in case that is the reason.

It is nice to be able to see what's going on back home (local news, etc.) and also to catch up on the shows I have backlogged on my tivo while on the road.

these days I'm just carrying a Roku HDMI stick, and slinging my ipad or iphone to the Roku and watching my Slingboxes that way. And now that the slingplayer app does BACKGROUND PLAYBACK, I can stream a show and do something else with the phone or ipad.

Does the Roku work like AppleTV with the iPad? Like you can stream AirPlay apps?

I see that it comes with Netflix, HBO GO, Hulu Plus, etc.

Would I be able to stream my Tivos through the Tivo iPad app. and then send it over to the Roku stick?

Certainly would be easier to use at a hotel than an AppleTV.

Maybe, I haven't tried my tivo that way. but on Roku there is a Slingplayer app, but it requires an iphone or ipad app to support it.

sort of like a chromecast functionality, but requires a 2nd app to support.

Also can run on Android.

I got one last year, I've been extremely happy with it. I've got it set up at my parents house so that I can still watch Packers games during the season. It has come in handy during longer layovers as well.

The app is unfortunately $15, but works well.
